Saints appoint Danny Ryan to development role

Post: # 692449Post Saints Media »

[quote]The St Kilda Football Club this week appointed Danny Ryan to the position of Player Development/ Opposition Analyst.

Danny will work closely with Sandringham coach Andy Lovell and Development Manager Danny Sexton to assist with the progression of St Kilda’s young players and help establish a solid foundation upon which to build for years to come. His role will also encompass opposition analysis and forward scouting duties.

Danny has worked with the Club as NSW Development Manager for the past three years and is a Level 3 qualified coach who has played a significant role in the development of NSW scholarship player Kane Murphy who was the NSW Player of the Year in 2008.

St Kilda Football Manager Greg Hutchison said, “With 21 players on our list falling into the ‘development’ category, it’s important that this area of our Club is fully resourced. We have a very young list and want to ensure that we have the right personnel in place to develop and nurture these talented players.

“We are delighted to appoint someone within our existing structure and look forward to working with Danny and the rest of our development team to create an exciting future for the Saints.â€

Kane Murphy could well become our best player tken through the NSW Scholarship program. His father was a top player for Sydney. I dont understand how we were able to snap him up.

Sydney not interested apparently. I'm not sure he ticks any of the key indicators height, speed, agility - read what you want into that.

Seems to be able find the ball though - natural footballer perhaps. Hope we get to see him play.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Sydney chose not to sign him as a NSW scholarship, and the scholarship supercedes the father-son rule

Not unlike our current coach, who had more will than skill, so makes sense I suppose.

Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

His old man was a wingman. The Swans had a centreline of Bolton, Williams & Murphy. Pretty handy line that!

Yeah, but Sydney were innovative back then. They mixed up their midfielders to include Ruck-Rovers, Rovers, Centremen and Wingmen to hide the fact that some of them were vertically challenged   !!

I beleive he played at Colac and also played with Old Paradians in the Ammos. May have gone to school there as well. he has been in Sydney for quite a few years and may have something to do with Lenny. May have played with him. Not sure on that though.

I'd heard that too- coached Lenny by reading this.
After growing up in Colac in Victoria, Ryan has been based in Sydney for the past 18 years, five of which he spent as coach of Pennant Hills in the SAFL.

Ryan came to know the Saints through Lenny Hayes, who played his junior football at Pennant Hills.

He helped the Saints whenever they played away games in Sydney and developed a strong working relationship with Tony Elshaugh and then-assistant Matt Rendell as well as recruiting guru John Beveridge.

"I've had a close relationship with John Beveridge for a long time. I talk to him more than I talk to my dad," he said.

Sydney overlooked Kane Murphy because he is tiny - 168cms and 59kgs. There no one shorter or lighter than him on any AFL lists in 2009.

He's 15?
His old man was a running wingman with good skills and goalkicking ability.
If Kane turns out like his dad, we will have another mid of good standard...will not be fringe.

He's probably already taller than either Paul Callery or Brad Gotch.
