Frankie Couglan always gave 100%, Greg Burns was as tough as old boots , Russell Jeffery was handy ,Bruce Duperouzel, Jeff Sarau ,Max Crowe,Graeme Gellie, Joffa Cunningham,Dean Grieg were all stalwarts in thier day without ever being stars

Bingo, was just thinking Frankie Coghlan m'self, thought he was a great tryer back when the team was pretty OP riddled. Frankie Peckett? Agree that Peckett was better than a GOP...also agree that there's a lot to choose from 1973 to about 1995!

I know, hence my follow on of the ole "??". Maybe he was a GOP, its all how you define the term, but to my memory in my early teens, he was above GOP. But we did have quite a few of them in those days.

My selction criteria: if you win Brownlows, Hall of Fame, All Aust, State of Origin, B&F's, media gongs, you rise above the GOP status.
To rise above OP, you should have a substantial career, say 5yrs <100 games, play consistant footy, give it your best shot, and be a good Saints clubman.

Wow, that's some criteria! So, all AFL teams apart from Geelong have been 95% GOP's over the last 4 years or so? Well, I'd have to say I think Peckett was a GSC, and Greg Burns, IMO.

As for Grant, in 1991 we had about 6 players who were the best in the comp in their respective positions, and Dave was one of them.

Number 11 Greg Burns was a top liner for the Saints. He had tremendous courage and capacity to win the hard ball. He had a toughness that was a bit scary on occassions in that sometimes you wondered whether he really felt that knock to the head he got. The only downside to his game that I can recall eas his kicking - occassionally loopy drop punts that lacked accuracy

This is bloody annoying cause I can't think of the player's name but I can tell you a bit about him. When he arrived at StK during Stan Alve's coaching he definitely gave the midfield a huge lift. He stayed at the Saints for approx 4 seasons. When he arrived he had crook knees and he left cause they were causing real grief. He ended up coaching a team in Gippsland somewhere I think. He came from Melbourne where he had played a limited number of games (Lack of opportunity at the time) and had won either the U19 or Reserve Grade medal when at Melbourne.
IMO this guy was a GOP who made a difference to StK's lineup at the time.

Saintly Safes you have a better memory than me. Rod Keogh was the man. Tough player, left foot natural kick and wasn't intimidated by anyone. I think would have played many more games for the Saints if his body had held together a bit better. I also understand he is Brent Crosswell's cousin.

Yeah he was good for us , he almost single handedly won us the first final in 97 againts Brisbane when Spider did his collarbone in the first quater.Its a pitty I carnt remember my wifes birthday or our wedding anniversary I guess I must of killed those brain cells "cheers"

Stephen Newport was an interesting player in that I wasn't quite sure how to rate him. In some respects he was probably our original tagger in the development of the 'modern'game. He certainly had what many call today the football smarts in working out the better ways of closing down an opponent's effectiveness before it became a regular feature of the game, and when doing this he had the ability to withstand very heavy pressure (he took some big hits probably reportable today). My other memory of his time with the Saints is that he lacked consistency. (Hang On - I think I have heard that before)
