carroll free to train with saints (herald sun)

MELBOURNE delisted full-back Nathan Carroll yesterday, paving the way for him to train with St Kilda. Carroll was contracted to the Demons for next season and the club said his salary would be included in next year's cap.

Carroll, 28, played 71 games in six seasons for the Demons, and his best year was 2006 when he played every game and finished sixth in the best-and-fairest.

But disciplinary issues, such as his involvement in two fights while travelling in Europe late last year, did not help his cause in 2008, and he was suspended for two pre-season games for a lack of professionalism.

Carroll turns to Saints for lifeline

Dan Silkstone | November 15, 2008

DEFENDER Nathan Carroll was de-listed by Melbourne yesterday and will attempt to restart his career at St Kilda through the national draft.

Carroll, 28, had been in a legal dispute with the club after the Demons threatened to sack him following a series of off-field misdemeanors.

The 71-game player's manager, Ricky Nixon, has been negotiating with the Demons this week to reach a settlement of his outstanding contract.

The Demons had baulked at paying out the remainder of the estimated $250,000-a-year contract because it would have inflated the club's total player payments and caused it to breach the salary cap.

But Melbourne said yesterday a deal had been reached and Carroll would be released. The club thanked Carroll for his contribution over seven years.

Carroll was elevated from Melbourne's rookie list in 2003 and played his first game that year. His best year came in 2006 when he finished sixth in the best and fairest and won its most improved player award.

But Carroll's time at Melbourne was marred by repeated off-field infractions, including allegedly fighting with teammate Brock McLean and racially abusing a member of staff.

He was suspended by the club for two pre-season matches for "lack of professionalism" and the Demons lost patience with him after a "mad Monday" incident that resulted in teammate Ben Holland being injured.

The Saints — eager to use Carroll to bolster their defence — will begin pre-season training on Monday, with the former Demon among their ranks.

Carroll will have two weeks to show his new teammates and the St Kilda coaching staff that he is serious and committed to resurrecting his career before the AFL draft on November 29.

Unbelievable.

Can someone please show me where any Saints employee or official has stated that we want Carroll?

Can someone please point out to me where any Saints official or employee has said we are 'eager to use Carroll to bolster our defense'?

I know journos write speculative pieces but to write this as FACT is just plain breathtaking.

I can't believe that we are still wasting so many spots on our list on rejects. If their previous club deemed that they weren't worth keeping, then I don't see how they'll help us win a flag.
