considering the calibre of players that retired last year...it was almost going to be debatable as to who deserved what...archer deserves it...hird does...rucuitto does...

harvey is the best by a mile in his field

I think harvey is best.........but west not a mile behind though.....

an opinion just like yours

a bit of the overate/underate perhaps

West is a 7 or 8 BF winner

well i guess i have never really rated scott west anyway...imo he's always been a stand-out in a pretty ordinary team...although we have been ordinary in patches we played 17 or so finals whilst harvey was at the club...not the greatest and not the worst

The Executive Committee of the AFL Players' Association voted Archer as the recipient of the Madden Medal ahead of an exceptional field of 2007 retiring greats, including James Hird, Nathan Buckley, Mark Ricciuto, Anthony Koutoufides, Luke Darcy and Chris Grant.

In the tightest of finishes, Archer received the coveted honour by one vote from Essendon champion James Hird with Collingwood's Nathan Buckley rounding out the top three.

anyone know the actual criteria on which its judged?

Obviously you have to retire to be eligible, but is it judged on how the player actually performs in their final season or over their entire career ?

I doubt Harvs will win it.

What sort of social issue stuff/community stuff has been doing of reasonable profile?

That may not score well for him IMO....

Harvey would have to win it you'd imagine...

He will definitely win the football achievement award, and you would think the personal development award, nobody is too far ahead in the community service, 2 out 3 is enough for me.

Indefatigable Saint Robert Harvey

ROBERT Harvey, Shane Crawford and Peter Bell are among the star nominees for the AFL Players’ Association Madden Medal, to be announced at an awards ceremony at Docklands on December 5.

Named in honour of former AFLPA Presidents and champion Essendon and Carlton players, Simon and Justin Madden, the Madden Medal will recognise the career achievements of a 2008 season retiring player.

The recipient of the Madden Medal will be the player who in the selection committee’s view has achieved excellence in football achievement, personal development and community spirit.

The inaugural 2007 Madden Medal was taken out by Glenn Archer. This year seven players have been nominated for the prestigious award:

Peter Bell – Fremantle
Shane Crawford – Hawthorn
Robert Harvey – St Kilda
Nigel Lappin – Brisbane Lions
Mal Michael – Essendon
David Neitz – Melbourne
Scott West – Western Bulldogs

The Madden Medal selection committee consists of the AFLPA Executive; Joel Bowden (President), Brett Burton (Vice-President), Luke Ball, Adam Goodes, Tom Harley, Nick Maxwell, Robert Murphy, Luke Power, Ashley Hansen AFLPA CEO Brendon Gale, and past player representative Simon Madden

I will not be impressed if Crawf takes it home.

I have always had a great disdain for him, I have always hated his Footy Show Persona, felt he was an overrated player who only had one really good year and he just seems like a world class knob...

yep dunno why but Ive always felt similar bout Crawford and ALWAYS felt he was overrated.

I nearly puked when I heard G Lyon denote on radio that Crawford took midfield endurance to the next level.......ahh......scuse me?

Say Harvey couldnt kick like Buckley, say he didnt kick enough goals BUT dont EVER suggest that he wasnt the ORIGINAL running machine.

Crawford since about 2000 has to me been a struggling actor/dancer wanna be gigolo/comedian who played footy on the side and spent most of his time attemtping to impress his medai mates.

THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!!!

Tool.

He lost me when I saw on TV that his 'impromptu Brownlow acceptance speech with tears' had been rehearsed and rehearsed, even down to the tears.
