Make up of Rookie List in '08

Post: # 489195Post Otiman »

Last year we had a rookie list that was there to fill some weak points in the side, and hopefully develop some AFL level players to fill those spots.

1 Ruckman
1 Full Back
4 Midfielders including...
1 Half Back (Geary)
1 Wing/Half Forward (Jones)
1 Tagger/Small Defender (Attard)
1 Pure Mid (Eddy)

Now, with our Rookie changes this year, delistment of Wall, and Promotion of Geary and Jones - What do we do with these three spots?

I'd like to see another defender prospect, a mid-size forward, and an inside mid. As per last year, Pace should be the number one criteria for selection.

Where do our guys with "permission to train" fit in on this?

Bail would fit your pacy hard-running midfielder (although I suspect he may actually be drafted rather than rookied).

The guy from Shep would fit your tough ball-winning inside mid

I reckon our rookie list should add:
Player X (pacy midfielder, hard runner - e.g. Bail)
Player Y (tall defender)
Player Z (key position, either end)

That's on the basis that we draft two midfielders in the actual draft itself, along with a ruckman and perhaps a half-forward type.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

I reckon our rookie list should add:

1/ A pacy small foward or rover who is very quick with good run down pace. (eg: Austin Wonaeamirri)

2/ A Tall Mature Defender. (eg: Nathan Grima 22yo)

3/ A Young Tall Forward with good pace.

i like the idea of a mature rookie defender as we are still unsure how maxy will go after last years horrendious run with injurys so it would be good to have a backup on the rookie list just in case ... in a perfect world we wont need to utilise any rookies next year :?

We did just get Dempster, a tall and mature defender, I would be very surprised if we could find a player of better quality to be drafted.
I can't remember his name now but Geelong's VFL side had a solid fullback who wasn't listed however Geelong are expected to pick him up. I wouldn't mind us taking him... if anyone could remember his name it would be great.

Dempster is quite tall but doesn't play tall from my memory, more a tall runner than a KPP type.

We have picked up Dempster and C Gardiner for more depth.....

Dempster can tag or play defence.

Charli is a medium forward.

We look like takingaas one of our draft picks a youing ruck, so with Van reehan as well that is enough ruckmen.

So for new rookies

A genuine FB if you can find one...and the rest just more mids!!!!

Scholarship list is not part of the rookie or main list.

38 main list
6 rookie list (Veteran listed players can take up spots here instead of the main list, Harvey and Hudghton for us, but neither are likely to be)
1 scholarship list (I think we might be able to take two on here)

As far as I know, Scholarship listed players can play for our VFL affiliate, as well as NAB cup games, but cannot be elevated like rookies - I'd like to know the full rules on this though.

So how do they join the senior list?
As far as I was aware it works just like the father son rule... But I haven't read any details I've only heard talk on forums, so I just assumed.

Correct, it's how Collingwood got Martin Clarke with their 3rd round pick. I don't believe there's a bidding system being implemented.

From memory IF you decide to elevatea Scholorship player you can do so with your LAST pick in the main draft...so effectively it is free pick......anda lot more generous therefore than the father son.

No there are separate rules for "International" rookies though I believe they are just part of the rookie allocation. From memory the big difference is that as long as they nominate you they get to play with you automatically, whereas normal rookies can be drafted by any club ona first in, first served basis.

Quick, skilled midfielder/half forward
20-22 year old tall forward/defender
Raw, tall, athletic ruckman

Gives us two potential midfielders in Eddy and a new player
Two developing ruckmen in Van Rheenen and new player
Attard as a possibility to be elevated if he recovers well
Backup option in case Roo or Kosi suffer a long-term injury

I am still confused about the status of Khan..

Some reports imply that as a scholraship player that he becomes an "extra" rookie (ie a seventh rookie)......other reports have him elevated as one of the 6 possible rookie spots.

Does anyone no for sure what his status is??????

Up to 2 international rookies can be held seperately for up to 3 years (rather than 2) by clubs, however this does not include irish players who must be included on the main rookie list.

No mention of scholarship players... probably because nobody seems to really understand how this works...
