Bulldogs in Hong Kong rescue drama

Mario Xuereb | October 5, 2007

TWO Western Bulldogs players on holiday in Hong Kong rescued a local woman who had jumped into Victoria Harbour last night.

Midfielder Daniel Cross and defender Tom Williams, on an end-of-season trip with a group of other Bulldogs players, were about to head off on a cruise of the harbour about 7pm (Hong Kong time) when the woman jumped into the water.

David Price, a Hong Kong-based Melbourne bloodstock agent touring with the Bulldogs, said Cross and Williams jumped in after the woman before dragging her out of the water.

Mr Price, a Bulldogs sponsor and long-time supporter, said the woman remonstrated and struggled with the two players as they tried to save her.

Bulldogs spokeswoman Stacey Mair, who spoke to Williams minutes after the rescue, said Cross and Williams were in good spirits after the incident.

"(The players) didn't realise that the woman was trying to commit suicide, they just thought that a fisherman or somebody else had jumped into the water," Ms Mair said.

"They had vaguely seen someone dive in but hadn't been paying attention because it was a busy place. But when they heard other people say that someone was drowning, that's when they leapt in."

Cross, 24, and Williams, 21 — who were standing on the dock waiting to board their boat — threw a life-ring to the woman.

When she refused to hold it, they dived in and swam about 200 metres to rescue her. They dragged the woman up a set of steps connecting the dock to the water.

Both received minor bruising and cuts as they struggled with the woman up the steps.

As she was being brought to shore, the woman said that she did not want to be saved. She was later taken to hospital.

Ms Mair said the two players did not require treatment for their injuries.

Cross and Williams flew to Hong Kong on Wednesday night for a short holiday.

A group of about 10 Bulldogs players are in Hong Kong for the unofficial club trip, which is scheduled to last four days.

The men are due back in Melbourne tomorrow.

It was him in a wig in the water.

Lost his way to the coaches box with ruck stats in his hand.

The injuries to the Bulldogs were sustained when he tried to convince them of the benefits of hit-outs to advantage.

That's exactly what I thought when I read this bit.
"They had vaguely seen someone dive in but hadn't been paying attention because it was a busy place. But when they heard other people say that someone was drowning, that's when they quickly removed their charcoal grey, two-button, pin-striped blazers and leapt in. Their jackets, available from Peter Jackson, were not damaged so they were pretty chuffed about that and the woman surviving was a nice bonus too."
