The deal as reported has us being shafted a bit. It's effectively a straight swap. However, Carlton only got pick 49 for Dow.

Not sure why we wouldn't have given up 35 for Dow and do a separate deal for Coffield.

IN: Dow, 40, future third (Carlton)
OUT: Coffield, 35, 56, future fourth (Fremantle).

Paddy Dow's impressive 16 possession average with only 50% game time should nudge closer to 30 possessions next year, with decent game time.

Will add much needed leg-speed too ... good get!!

So we slide down 5 places this year (35 to 40), but we get Carltons 3rd (48?).

Pretty much straight swap Coffield for Dow

We weren't going to use 56 this year, so that's a pick we have up without any consequences. The deal isn't fantastic, but it's not really a net loss

It's annoying to lose the guy we drafted with pick 8, but we got the guy drafted with pick 3 the same year.

Seems reasonable.
Dow is better than Coffield so seems about right.

It looks like we sweetened it for Essendon for paying overs for Gresh

Disappointing to lose Coffield. I think he can play.

But welcome to Dow.

Blues Fan on BF view:

Dow will kill it for u, I’d be excited, your clearance & attack from clearance just improved. He was winning 25% of centre bounces.
U got the bargain of the trade period, after the s**t he’s been thru he never dropped his head, Ross shows faith in him & god only knows what he can produce

Watch his highlights and how often he got it to Charlie one out - do you have a tall forward who might like that?
Tipping he will also cause havoc with Henry, he will find your outside runners, u just got a lot quicker, his hands are elite.
Mind u, I still hope u guys fail miserably but I hope he does well 😂

Breaking it down
Essendon plays banker

Carlton got future 3rd round (tied to Essendon) + future 4th round (tied to Doggies) (won't get used)+ future 4th (tied to Fremantle) (probably won't get used)
Carton lost future 3rd round (tied to Carlton) future 4th round (tied to Carlton) + Dow to St Kilda
Effectively St Kilda has got Dow out of Carlton for a swap of 3rd round picks between Carlton & Essendon.
Carlton fancies their 3rd round not as good as Essendon's.

Meanwhile Doggies get Coffield + pick 52 + pick 56 + Future 4th (tied to Fremantle) sent to Carlton in the trade
pick 52 & pick 56 = 246 +194 = 440 points equal to pick 39
Doggies lost pick 40 pick 40 + future 4th round (tied to Doggies) sent to Carlton but won't get used)
St kilda has given Coffield away for free and thrown in a handful of points

Essendon the banker
Got pick 35 + future 4th round (tied to Carlton (won't get used
Cost pick 52 + future 3rd round (tied to Essendon)
Essendon up graded pick 52 to pick 35 at the cost of their future third rounder

Conclusion
St Kilda has done badly but provided Essendon with a thankyou for enabling pick 21
But St Kilda has gifted Coffield to Doggies for free, but got Dow for very little.

Yep the more convoluted the less likely to be called collusion.

All that matters
St Kilda got Dow, lost Coffield
Got pick 40, (429 points) + future 3rd round tied to Carlton), lost pick 35 + pick 56, 522 + 194 = 716 points = pick 20)
St Kilda lost 287 point for Carlton future 3rd so less than 100 points
Basically St Kilda traded Dow for Coffield

Now have picks 13, 21, 40

Have lost future 2nd & 4th round picks but gained future 3rd round pick (tied to Carlton).

That is all except for finding a home for Billings & McKenzie.
And can always volunteer to be banker in a multi way trade.

Dow more important to us than Coffield

Where were we playing a fit Coffield anyway?

Doubt he pushes any of our defenders out, including Webster or Stocker....we have loads of HBF.

Dow as a contested ball / clearance player with speed is what we need.

3 decent picks and Henry......

Pretty reasonable trade period so far

We’re improving our draft hand retrospectively…

A novel approach if nothing else

I think Dow competes with Jones for a spot if both are fit. Both know how to win the footy and can burst from the stoppage but have scrappy disposal and consistency issues. I'm very ambivalent about this trade. Would've liked to see Coffield push Webster out of the 22 next season but Dow pushing Jones out wouldn't be a bad thing either.
