Suns interested in McKenzie

Post: # 2033851Post bobmurray »

GOLD Coast has an interest in uncontracted St Kilda wingman Dan McKenzie, who is yet to be offered a new deal to remain at the Saints.

Lucky to get a 3rd round for him.

Think like Ben Long. One to wish luck if he wants to go or keep on a 1 year contract if he is willing to stay.

Must be part of Dimma’s missing 20% for Gold Coast’s first ever flag..

If he was fit I would have him in the starting 18 based in the last time I remember him playing.

Suspect due to his fitness issues we have offered 1 year.

Quite rightly he and his manager are seeing if he can get a longer term deal elsewhere.

If GC are willing to give him 2 or 3 years he will go imo

LUCKLESS St Kilda wingman Dan McKenzie has flown to Germany to see world-renowned soft tissue specialist Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt in a bid to keep his AFL career alive after a nightmare injury run.
The 27-year-old hasn't played at AFL level since round 13, 2022 and only managed two VFL appearances this year due to persistent calf strains that have left his future clouded.

Isn't that the same doctor that solved Hannebery's injury woes ?

What do you make of him flying to Germany right now, in the middle of trade period.
No trade? Club's blessing? Contract awaits?
Or another club seeking doctor's diagnosis?

Best case scenario for him would be to get picked up as a rookie. Can’t see anyone taking him in the draft. Certainly has no trade value. A shame because he can play.

Hopefully Healing Hans can sort DMAC out, would hate to lose him - rate him highly when he's fully fit, looks of dash and aggro, just what we need!

On the AFL site it says McKenzie instigated the trip to Germany himself with the Club’s support. Saints have a possible 1 year contract offer, or considering selecting him on rookie list. It said that other clubs are also awaiting the outcome of results.
By all accounts he does 5 days of testing, then he has to await a couple of days before another appointment with “Healing Hans”, to get his prognosis.

His last season for us was very, very impressive. If he can get his body right, look out.

Let McKenzie walk to Suns, throw in #21 compensation for Gresham and swoop in on Ollie Hollands.
I have watched plenty of Hollands in the reserves and he can play, kick & run.
Would suit our game style.

If Carlton miss on Hollands they may decide to keep Dow and that would be a win/win for us.

Of all the players who might fall into the category of moving on or being moved on, Dan Mackenzie is the toughest for me to reconcile.

When he's fit and firing, DMac is outstanding. He's everything you might want in a St Kilda player.

Courageous, selfless, tough and uncompromising.

But he's played such little footy of any kind. Plagued to almost epidemic proportions by soft tissue injuries.

The injury count so bad, his footy career might have come to an end.

He's reportedly seeking the help of a soft tissue injury specialist in Germany to try and overcome his recurring calf problems.

I feel for him. It would be a sad way to end his career if he couldn't play again because of injury.

When he is fit, DMac is easily in our best 22, IMO.

Dan Hannebery gets a introduction fee and a bag of sausages.
Dan McKenzie gets introduced to sausage maker and they both create spin-off. Don is Good OUT. Dan is Good IN. New product line called HAMSTRING. Like beef jerky and good for barbeque and with German beer. Tim Watson gets in with his wines. Introduced by Seb Ross.

Tax write offs all around.

Team accountant, sponsor managers all in on the deal.

Yachts, Portsea, Lindsay Fox, mediterrannean cruise. etc. etc.

And if that makes no sense, I don't think the optics of visiting the German doctor point to big bucks on a contract, but know knows.

5 years ago everyone was bagging the fk out of Alan Richardson for signing him to a four year deal - not that AR was list manager?!. He was a massive whipping boy in 2019! Then he had a good season and that commentary disappeared??

But now he’s constantly injured (calf not hamstring)

OOC
I’d offer him base plus incentives or he leaves

If he wasn't OOC and potentially a free hit I doubt anyone club look at him.

9 seasons 70 games?

Strong points - Quick, tough, team oriented, athletic at his best
Weak points - kicking, durability, lack of impact when he plays

C grade AFL player at best

Happy for him to move on and give a draftee or a rookie a shot on the list.

Wasn't it concussion that struck him down? And THEN the calves?

Either way, if a Aussie docs aren't helping it looks like potential list clogging material.

The only thing to think about now, is could we do better? Perhaps we can't?

Mason Wood started 2023 like a house on fire, but his second half..? Was it better than DMAc? Those big marks and end-to-end running not withstanding.
