Brodie McLaughlin linked to Saints

Post: # 2032824Post Sainternist »

Key forward who kicked 50+ goals this year for the GCS reserves team. With Membrey’s future at the club in doubt, I guess this makes sense.

I'm not sure what the point of recruiting him would be.
Silvagni's Moneyball pick?

You would think if he came to us must be considered better than Caminiti and Sharman

Maybe Caminiti. I don't think he's that good. Unless Caminiti improves another 50% next year he won't stay on.

Yeah. As if he might not improve with ONE pre-season? :?

Is already a better forward than the #1 draft pick Cadman.

Looks similar to Sharman...
But also looks like
1. they dont think Camniti is ready
2. are not confident that Membrey will be back
3. have a different role in mind for Owens, rather than 3rd tall forard

4. Higgins and Butler are not 'lead up' forwards no matter how hard they try.

I worry when we are looking at 25 year olds. If we're going for that age bracket we should look at Mannagh from Werribee.

Unless Membrey pulls the pin

Not sure why we’d be going down this path

He’s undersized, much like Sharman he’s already 25 and is yet to play senior footy

We have
King
Hayes
Membrey
Caminiti
Sharman
Keeler
Allison

It's an interesting point. We are missing the mid sized, lead up forward. A Fritsch, Mihocek, Ugle-Hagan type.

We tried to play Higgins and Butler in those roles and it failed.

You go too tall and the ball rebounds too easily, too short and there's nobody to bring the ball to ground. I feel regardless of his ability, Membrey doesn't fit with what our forwardline needs.

To break your list down, there's:

King, Caminiti, Keeler - ~200cm types (Daniher, Hipwood, Hawkins type)
Membrey, Hayes, Allison - undersized KPF that plays tall
Sharman - Agile lead up high marking

Also you have:
Small opportunistic forwards - Higgins, Gresham
Pressure forwards - Butler

It surprises me that Allison, at 195cm, is considered undersized to be a Key Forward.

I think Allison's problem is he's "under" the ability needed to be an AFL player.

Jesse Hogan is 196cm and he goes alright as a Key Forward.
Not sure 1cm makes a world of difference. Ability does.

Makes our recruiting judgement call on Hayden McLean, in our own backyard, look sillier and sillier. Definitely a moneyball call, little risked for a, fingers crossed, big gain but 25 seems to be pushing the envelope.

Have seen a bit of him.
Very good VFL player, depth at AFL only.

Undersized in height but very strong.
Good player but would prefer Camanitti and Sharman.

They might be looking at McLaughlin as insurance in case Membrey doesn't play again and also because Hayes is injury prone.

Being a KPP is not necessarily about cms

It’s about how they play

Membrey at 188cm plays as a key forward - he is very strong and a good contested mark with great hands. He leads up at the footy very naturally and has great forward craft.

Allison 195cm plays like a HF/Winger like the 192cm Mason Wood

Sharman plays like a KPF without the strength - he is built like a medium but his kick-mark. He is a nice grab and a nice kick.

Hayes does the ‘donkey work’

If Membrey pulls the pin, I’d go

King
Hayes
Sharman

Back up
Caminiti
Keeler
McLaughlin

Gotta agree. This is just more conjecture from outside the Cllub.

Silvagni's Moneyball pick?
Exciting.

Silvagni knows him Brodie very well from his under age days, playing with SOS's son Jack in Nth Balwyn.

Brodie was always the outstanding player. As a kid he was small, but brave, very talented and has an outstanding footy brain.

Good points, I've not seen Allison play.

Too many of the tall players that struggle to chase, tackle, and pressure and the ball will rebound far too quickly. We need players who can win it at ground level.

We finally learned to negate the intercept defender (Sicily, May, Andrews - 3 brownlow votes in games against us)

Keeler is an interesting one, I think he's a roll of the dice and will be a superstar or delisted.

IMO a switch forward for Coffield might be a career changer for him.

First 6:
Higgins King Butler
Sharman Hayes/Membrey Coffield

With Caminiti on the bench.

Max Heath also a contender.

What's the point in getting him we do need a key forward but not another 193-95 cm player we need a 198+ KPP who can compete with the big defenders.
We have Hayes 194cm Allison 195cm Sharman 193cm and what is the point of difference with this player will he play back but then we have Battle 193cm cordy 195cm no really big KPF except King and Caminiti and that is where we struggled last season so we don't need more players this height.

If he's kicking 50 goals in a season in the magoos he must go alright. Sort of kid we need, I reckon.

This obsession with height and power forwards is so 1993.

The game moved on years ago from this metric as meaning anything.

Gorilla backs have also gone extinct.

Tick most of these boxes and you’re a chance.

Agility
Speed or at least not slow
Good lung capacity and aerobic fitness
Good kick
Good hands
Upper body strength
Good leap
Good above the head and decent stretch

Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.

King, Caminiti, Keeler, Marshall/Heath - that's enough on a list. Any new option would need to be an upgrade on Caminiti who hasn't even had a preseason yet.

2 big forwards just spreads the defense better, but you need to be calculated with entries (which we aren't).
