No idea why you’d delay a free agency deal - makes no sense from a negotiation perspective

This whole situation is bewildering.

Why isn't Essendon lodging the paperwork?

Perhaps on paper the offer is rather "lowball" and St.Kilda would obviously match it forcing Essendon into a trade. I say "on paper" because the real deal could involve sweeteners like bulls*** jobs at "A-mart" for relatives. Just like Jye Caldwell two years ago.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

It sounds like pick swaps is why the deal is being delayed right up to the official closing time, I’m guessing that means we have secured our desired first round compensation pick.

It all comes out in the wash.

My guess for delay, Essendon know we are waiting on compo to get other deals done such as Henry, Coffield and therefore hoping to make us act early and potentially get stuck.
Feel it has backfired as if you believe what is said Gresham is willing to stay if low ball offer by Ess to try and stuff us. DODO then gets nothing again.
When player is 100% gone it works but when open to staying it doesn't.
My guess now WB will need some points for Croft we may get WB 2nd and points in our 3rd and something from freo to them with coffield

As long as it doesn’t impact other trades, I’m hoping this ‘deal’ falls through.

When a RFA player nominates a club the figure is already agreed with the nominated club, but it is an agreement in principle only subject to all parties getting what they want, in this case it is us that need to get what we want in terms of draft selection compensation as we hold control over contract release and so we decide either we want to pay the amount or we don’t…but the amount is not set by us so we don’t get to low-ball the figure.

With respect of Gresh saying he’d be happy to stay well that is most likely a contentious claim on numerous fronts.

I’m not across the rules and tactics at all, but I wonder if a certain dynamic plays out. 1) The Prince sulks and grumbles says he wants to jump ship 2) the courts say ‘let him go’ and begin to crunch numbers. 3) the suitors say, ‘ let em sweat it out, paralyze them for a few weeks to weaken them in other negotiations, eventually they’ll starve and accept a shitty deal, 4) the prince is incensed - how dare they stall! I am the Prince. 5) Courts now offer the Prince olive leaf…’My lord, we know we’ve had some misunderstandings, but why don’t you consider staying and then stick it right back up their conceited rear ends in the process…6)Prince doesn’t admit it, but pride stung, decides to stay after all…7) wins Brownlow.

Dream on white boy??.

St Kilda forward/midfielder Jade Gresham has joined Essendon.

As a restricted free agent, St Kilda had the ability to match Essendon’s offer for the key defender but opted not to.
According to SEN's Sam Edmund, The Saints are now set to receive an end of Round One compensation pick for losing Gresham.

Take it and run.

No way we would get that on an open market if he was to be traded.

As much as I hate it as I was hoping for pick #13, #21 is about the correct number for Gresham.

Highly unlikely we would get a better player than Gresham in the draft with #21 however if we move this onto Freo for Henry it probably looks about right and a decent trade for us.

Henry has the upside, speed and running capacity to fit RTB's game style.
Gresham a better player, with some mercurial skills but with players like Hill, Butler, Higgins & Billings up forward probably someone we can quite easily cover.

I really hope Billings stays, gets super fit and forces RTB to play him.

Collingwood reportedly offering #19 for Shultz, IMO Gresham is a better player.
Shultz would be on a lot less coin.

Pick 19 for Schultz and pick 21 for Gresh is about right on current form.

The real disappointment is the cost.

Gresh picked round one pick 18
Schultz who is the same age, was picked at 57 from Williamstown 3 years later.

Reality : Gresh is average.

Sorry but this is a bad take. Shultz is a far better player than Gresham and one of the top small-mid forwards in the league.

Gresham, like Billings has just been grossly over paid by us.

Teams eyes light up when our higher draft picks have injuries.

Anyone have a clue about what our cap space is. Can’t imagine it isn’t significant or “war chest” like?

Pick 21 but that will slide out a few to mid 20s as there will be the odd father son but there are expected to be a number of Northern Zone academy picks that CAN be matched inside the top 20 (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney & GWS).
The rules are different for other club academies.
Gold Coast potentially has 4 academy players they will match.
Those matches are expected to be in the top 20 but as happened with Nick Daicos who was allowed to fall to pick 4 clubs may not force Gold Coast's hand when they should.
Collingwood matched pick 4 at a cost of 1,627 instead matching pick 1 at a cost of 2,400points

Schultz is better than Gresham by quite some distance. Kicks more goals, a better field kick a better defensively.
Perhaps Gresham might pull his finger out now but to have paid him $800k a season for what he has deleivered its not hard to see why they were happy to see the back of him.

According to article during the week pretty good. Don't have many contracts with uplift in them so when cap goes up much will be free money not yet committed.

Feels a little bittersweet, as he was a favourite player a few years ago.

Oh, Gresham
I would give everything just to be like him 🎵

Ben McKay is worth a pick 3, yet Gresh is worth pick 21. Okay, AFaiL
