GWS Would Need to Win by 7 Goals

Post: # 2028048Post StPeter »

Saints will stay clear of GWS provided they don't win by more than seven goals against Carlton following the Saints 12 point loss today.

This seems unlikely.

Now we just need Melbourne to beat Sydney to get a home final

And if Sydney wins and GWS wins by 7 goals, then we get to play Carlton at the MCG. And I think we'd be in with a pretty good chance in that game. So nothing to get too bothered about IMO. TBH, I reckon GWS is the team I'd be least keen on us having to play ATM.

Nah, the Swans is the last team we'd want to play. 4 wins from the previous 19 games. Although, like Geelong, I reckon RTB has put a lot of time into Sydney as they have been a benchmark of the AFL for a long time, and his last game coaching us last time was a losing home final against Sydney. It was most surprising at the time. Came out of nowhere.

Compared to Carlton - 8 out of last 11 and having won our last 4 against GWS - all interstate - or the Bulldogs, who we beat 50% of the time, Sydney are the last team out of those 4 I would want to play. Mind you, I think Ross would have put a lot of time into the Swans because of that final game. I think he holds onto that sort of stuff and uses it.

And if we won that, we would play the loser of Collingwood and Melbourne the following week here (i think).

Possible outcomes
Sydney wins & GWS wins by more than 7 goals = St Kilda 8th plays Carlton 5th at the MCG (Sydney 6th & GWS 7th play in Sydney, Dogs miss out)
Sydney wins & GWS wins by less than 7 goals = St Kilda 7th plays Sydney 6th in Sydney (Carlton 5th & GWS 8th play again at MCG, Dogs miss out)
Sydney wins & GWS loses = St Kilda 7th plays Sydney 6th in Sydney (Dogs remain in 8th play Carlton 5th at MCG, GWS miss out)

Sydney loses & GWS wins by more than 7 goals = St Kilda 7th plays GWS 6th in Sydney (Carlton 5th plays Sydney 8th at MCG, Dogs miss out)
Sydney loses & GWS wins by less than 7 goals = St Kilda 6th plays GWS 7th in Melbourne probably MCG (Carlton 5th plays Sydney 8th at MCG, Dogs miss out)
Sydney loses & GWS loses = St Kilda 6th plays Sydney 7th in Melbourne probably MCG (Dogs remain in 8th play Carlton 5th at MCG, GWS miss out)

Unless it’s changed since last year, the winner of 6v7 plays the loser of 2v3.
At least we get a Prelim in Melbourne.

Sydney's current side is poor and comfortably the weakest of teams heading into the finals. A loss to them home or away would be a massive disappointment.

They’d won six straight before today. They must do a few things right.

5* Given they actually should've lost to Adelaide. Before that they beat freo and GC by 20ish points and barely scrapped together wins against the bulldogs, Essendon and GWS in what is the most unconvincing 6 game winning streak in the history of the AFL. Simply don't deserve to be there.

They need to win by at least 44 points based on Carlton’s current score.

GWS might get that 44 point win, they're all over Carlton now.
Great, play at Giant Stadium in front of no one.
Or if we play them here, we'll, real easy to get tickets.
The team with no supporters whose supporters were outnumbered at a home semi final by West Coast supporters.

I may be seeing our final live up here in Sydney after all. I suspect Carlton will put players on ice and will not go in hard. Giants could pile on score in this last qtr

Makes you wonder if Carlton have engineered a result to play Sydney rather than GWS.
