Pressure

Post: # 2000226Post st.byron »

Just watched the last quarter again.
When the game was really on the line our pressure was outstanding. The Druggies had sfa space and time. Was really a revelation compared to what we’ve seen the past years.
And…..not only that but the new and young guys were superb.

Stocker’s run off half back and bullet disposal
NWM taking it on
Pou wasn’t starring but was involved in scoring chains and his awareness and hands are excellent.
Ditto Caminiti. Reckon we’ve found a gem there.
Windhager clutch goal

And some more established players
Wood fabulous
Hill ran and ran and ran and ran
Gresh a threat
Butler’s finishing
Seb Ross gutsy and totally committed
Ditto Crouch

It was a real team pressure effort combined with taking the game on and attacking when we won the ball back through our pressure.

It’s a type of pressure that we simply didn’t have under Ratten

NWM had a very good game. He is now super confident with his disposals, and his defensive play is much better this year.

Agree. I spent a fair bit of time during the wee hours looking through overlooked and underated stats.

Ryan Byrnes covered the most ground of any player, 17.8 kilometres. Incredible. Sinclair 16.9, Widager and Phillipou 16.3 (same as Essendon's best Nic Martin) don't rate a mention in those "fantasy points" but, boy, doesn't it show up in the result!

Byrnes clocked 3.4 km at "high speed", Brad Hill 3.3. Hill's running was outstandiing. The number of times he sprinted hard to stand the mark thwarted the Bombers runnning game.

Stats like these belie opinions of some players having "quiet" games. 100% effort all night. Byrnes was electric in the opening minutes when we blew the game open, still busting his gut when we were slamming home goals in the last quarter.

Did Windhager's goal in the last look the kick of a tired player? No, straight through the middle because he is extremely fit, as are his team mates.

I do remember thinking he was seriously puffed out when he took the mark.
Didn’t show in the kick

He had just run hard to lay a tackle and won a free kick. He was entitled to have a couple of gasps.

Love the pressure and the turnovers, but too many times last night once we turned it over we had nowhere to go.

Hopefully the boys in the box are working on a solution.

I think with Steele out and the absence of a marking tall… we reverted to a slow, hold the ball, pass it around style which has been the hallmark of the last few years. You note in the first 20min and last 15, we ran the ball ferociously, moved it fast and backed ourselves to win the contest.
