Another injury blow

Post: # 1993158Post Saintmike65 »

I have been advised that Mason Wood has, what is thought to be a groin injury at training this morning.
There seems to be a curse on our talls!!

Let's hope it's no more than a month. That'll give him a few weeks to get right for round one.

That's a shame, hope its nothing serious.

Massive respect for this guy, cut from North and given the opportunity at the Saints and nobody would argue he has given it everything in his time with us. He has been excellent value as a DFA.

As you wrote earlier he is well suited to the hard running RTB game plan (we are expecting) given his elite endurance.

Speaking to a close friend of Mason's recently, said that he thought the Brisbane game in Round 13 was his last AFL game. He thought his own performance was bad enough that he'd be dropped and that'd be it - no more games, no new contract. He was dropped that week, then gave everything on the track, got back in the team three weeks later and said he's played every game since as if it's his last.

Let’s hope that young Stocker will be a similar story!

Wood seems exceptionally professional and very driven, I will back him to do everything right and be a huge chance for round 1.

Interesting story. It did seem that the penny dropped for him about what was required, at some point, and he just seems to have gotten better and better.

Mike have you heard or seen anything at the trainings with regards to who will play the 2nd ruck roles? I can understand us going with a smaller more mobile forward line, but surely Lenny wasnt serious when he suggested trialling Owens in the ruck. He might be advanced body wise but playing a second year player against AFL ruckman is asking a lot and exposes him to unecessary injury.

When you think about Owen covering off a ruck spot you only need to think of Shaun Grigg. As long as there's a contest there will be benefits to those expecting it.

Some on here used to perceive rucks as dinosaurs but another awakening has them calling for two rucks.

Seems a good call if we wish to confuse line-ups whilst we cover off. Necessity creates opportunities.

Does it possibly get worse than losing Maxy K?

Campbell running today, light session. Kozzie was there, doesn’t look as though he has put an ounce of weight on. He would be handy if only about 10 years younger.

Gain young Stocker, Dmac confirmed as long term injured. Break even? Bit of a net loss?

I was at training a while back and saw young Adams working with the rucks predominantly Campbell and have since herd that he is being looked at as doing ruck duties.
Even though he has not much experience there did some rucking in SANFL he would be a better option the Owens at 198cm and 87kg it would allow Owens to be freed up to play a more damaging role else where.

Current Status of Injuries (and expected return to match duties date)

Pulling numbers out of thin air here - would you agree that these are reasonable estimates based on what we know?

1) Max King (Round 10?)
2) Jack Billings (Round 1?)
3) Jack Hayes (Round 8?)
4) Mason Wood (Round 3?)
5) Zac Jones (Round 1?)

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
