Terrible news for the ageing warhorse, i wonder if it's the same leg he broke previously.

In the Saints Women's team Nicola Xenos has torn her left ACL and is out for the year.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

That will be it for him. He’s been a great warrior for us. One of the bravest of players

Broken Fibula......about 12 weeks? That would mean back in training by round 6 and fit to play by round 10? It may not be over for him, but at 33 years old and given his three most recent injuries (all major ones), it'll be a battle to for him leapfrog players who will have cemented their spots by mid season.

Anyone know if it is the same leg he broke in China?

So now the captaincy question must be answered.

Interesting to note that Ben McEvoy has been appointed Hawthorn's captain.

Plenty here always felt he was a potential leader.

He deserves better, if that's it for him. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Rotten luck - was probably going to be his last season.

Door wide open now for a change of captain if he is unavailable until mid season

He broke his left leg in China - found an article on the AFL website from 2019. So same leg.
Terrible luck - he’s a tough one and leads by example.
All the best to him.

What an irony that we lose our incumbent captain on the same day Hawthorn appoints one of our exes as their captain in Ben McEvoy. Big boy was often touted as a future captain of our club. Excellent choice by the hawks. The trade that saw him go to Hawthorn, not so much.

Another stroke of genius that was brought to you by the finest Vaudeville act of recruiting and list management, the Trout and the Pelican.

Though McEvoy wouldn't get a game in our best 22 now, and certainly wouldn't be captain... we essentially got Savage and Dunstan for him from memory..?

Club is saying he will be running again in 6 weeks - tough bugger ! If that be so, he can force his way back in early in the season. Don’t count him out just yet .

Rotten luck for Gears, so perhaps now a Co - Captain situation would suit, with Gears and another [probably Jack S] sharing the role.

More accurate to say Savage and Acres. We picked Dunstan ahead of Acres, so if we hadn't done the trade we would still have Dunstan, but no Acres or Savage. Unless of course the Hawks used that pick on Dunstan themselves.

recovery to peak fitness may take a bit longer though unless it’s a very slight fracture or something

My observation with these types of injuries is that the leg tends to get a bit weaker even post healing hence running and the power/strength is what is impacted. Depending on the leg... kicking or his ability to push off that leg into a sprint etc might be an issue.
You always have to remember with breaks that that first patch of time post injury recovery, there’s a reasonable risk of reinjuring or reaggravating the initial injury quickly if there’s heavy impact

Alternatively, if it feels weak and he favours the other leg subconsciously... he’s more prone to developing some type of overuse issue with the other leg though that’s more in line with knees i guess

I think best case scenario is early second half of the season

McEvoy would've been our number one ruckman for nigh on a decade by now if he hadn't been traded. There would've been no need to waste time on spuds like Longer, Pierce and to a lesser degree, Hickey (all trout and the pelican specials)

No need to get Paddy, last year, either. He may well have assumed the captaincy after Roo, instead of Geary. We'll never know. Had he stayed on, he would by now be one of the first picked.

It's a joke to state he wouldn't be in our best 22, considering we wouldn't have had to get Paddy if BB had been our number 1 ruckman for 8 years. He was always seen as leadership material, as well.

So we got Savage and Dunstan. (2013 trade. Don't know how Acres fits in there). Big deal. Average players, with Savage no longer at the club. Dunstan couldn't get a game last year and looks even further away this year. Big Boy a dual Premiership player, and now club captain. Yep, what a great trade!

Bad luck Gears. Hope you recover soon.

While we're on the topic of Ben, in hindsight, probably shouldn't have released BJ and Dal as well as those trades did not work out at all.

Trading is always a risk.

History, now but I much prefer Paddy over Ben.

Don't forget Bains had his fingerprints over all those decisions as well.

Channel 7 reporting same leg and out for around 6 weeks and it shouldn't affect decision on captaincy.

Lethlean said it's really up to Geary if he wants to continue as captain or not.
