FOOTY fans starved of live sport this year may have a bumper year next season, thanks to promises of free upgrades and better access to their favourite players.

Clubs have promised fans the chance to mingle with their heroes at special fans’ events once social distancing rules are relaxed and to have their names showcased on banners at the first home games of 2021.

Carlton offered supporters who kept their 2020 memberships an extra membership for a family member who wasn’t already part of the club, while Geelong thanked Cats fans who didn’t ditch their memberships with a free junior clinic, a $20 voucher for the Cats Shop and a recognition pin.

Hawthorn, Richmond, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs have all pledged discounts or credits towards 2021 memberships or making guest passes available.

A Hawthorn spokeswoman said: “The club is also currently running its Big Member Thank You which includes weekly spot prizes, exclusive member offers, merchandise discounts, giveaways and a Big Member Showcase with thousands of prizes to give away, including a brand new Nissan Qashqai.”

St Kilda has written to Saints fans to thank them for their support “when so many people have faced significant hardship” and promised members a free upgrade or reward next season."

Collingwood has sent supporters a “commitment certificate” signed by president Eddie McGuire and coach Nathan Buckley.

Despite fans being blocked from attending the footy due to the pandemic restrictions, there has been only a 1 per cent reduction in memberships this year.
