Swans chasing Paddy McCartin

Post: # 1875281Post StPeter »

It was reported on the radio this morning (SEN I think) that the Swans are keen to draft Paddy McCartin to join his brother.

Hope they realise he was a No1 draft pick and so go all in with the Swannies first round pick.

They don’t need to use a draft pick. He is a delisted free agent.
Anyone, including us can pick him up for free.

If true, then Swans have lost the plot.

Paddy is living with Lucy Brownless.

Is Gary the Grass Cutter now mates with Billy Froffy again?
Is that how he gets the news?

We get zero compensation is that right ? Seems like a typical StKilda scenario

I agree - I think we should get compensation for all the players who get drafted that aren't on our list.

Good luck to Paddy hopefully he can fulfil his potential at the Swans or other. On exposed form will go down as another top pick who peaked as an 18yo monstering juniors and that list is long.

As I have said all along, he will be on a list somewhere in 2021. Don't think he should be though.

If he is knowing our luck, he will probably win the Coleman medal.

Given how much he has already cost us, perhaps the AFL could just give him back to try.

Will get picked up and given a chance. 3-4 clubs pretty keen.

From herald sun.com.au

"Former St Kilda forward Paddy McCartin must convince league chiefs of fitness before returning to the AFL after concussion battle

Former St Kilda forward Paddy McCartin is eyeing an AFL return despite serious concussion problems forcing him out of the game. But his comeback plans have been met with caution from an ex-Demon.
Michael Warner, Herald Sun

Concussion-plagued former St Kilda forward Paddy McCartin’s bid to return to football will have to be approved by the AFL.

McCartin, 24, is eyeing a comeback just 12 months after stepping away from the game because of crippling concussion symptoms.

But the decision could yet be taken out of his hands.

The AFL confirmed on Monday night it would have the ultimate say on whether the 2014 No.1 draft pick was given the green light to resume his stalled 35-game career.

The AFL will have the ultimate say on whether Paddy McCartin would be given the green light to resume is AFL career..

“Given Paddy’s previous concussion history, the AFL will work with him and any potential club that he may play for, in assessing his fitness to return to play in the AFL or at another level of football,” a league spokesman said.

St Kilda has expressed some interest in redrafting McCartin, while Sydney, where his younger brother Tom plays, has also emerged as a suitor.

McCartin suffered eight concussions at the Saints, opening up on the extent of his symptoms in a disturbing interview last May.

“I am just a shell of the person I was, really. I am just completely different,” McCartin said. “It is very concerning. I just can’t do basic things, really.

“Footy aside, I have lost my identity as a person, which is hard.”

But after a lengthy break, McCartin has declared himself right to go for another crack at the AFL.

Melbourne great Garry Lyon said on Monday McCartin was in “unbelievable” shape on the eve of the draft.

“He’s slimmed down, he looks hard, he looks really lean and he’s worked his backside off and if he gets a second chance, I think he’s beautifully positioned for it,” Lyon told SEN.

If passed fit to play, McCartin could nominate for next month’s national draft or join a club as a delisted free agent early next year.

But Mark of the Century high-flyer Shaun Smith, who last month won a historic $1.4 million concussion damages payout because of debilitating brain injuries suffered while playing football, has urged McCartin to “really, really consider” his decision.

“We all want to play footy and I know exactly where he’s coming from, but if he’s got any doubt at all he should walk away,” Smith said.

“You’re playing with fire there, really. It’s not like you’re going to have a crook knee or a crook shoulder for the rest of your life - you’re going to have a crook brain.

“And if he’s already got permanent damage he’ll regret it down the track.”

Smith’s insurance company, MLC, paid the money after recognising he had suffered a “total and permanent disablement” as a result of repeated head knocks across his 109-game AFL career.

Incapable of working again, he requires lifelong treatment and daily medication.

The landmark decision followed revelations St Kilda legend Danny Frawley was suffering from Stage II CTE at the time of his death last year.

Frawley is the second VFL/AFL player to be diagnosed with CTE after footy great Graham “Polly” Farmer, who died in August last year."

It is a typical scenario for AFL Teams.

He is a delisted free agent and can go anywhere. Just like with Membrey and Roberton who joined St Kilda.

Or the slightly different but 100% comparable case of Marsh who walked out on the Pies due to personal issues and we gained for zero.

If Saints want him, and the AFL is agreeable, he will be a saint again next year.

It would be a ballsy decision by the AFL to allow Paddy to resume his football career after the troubles Paddy's had from multiple concussions.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Argh! a true nightmare scenario. We wish him well, we really do - but we'd all rather he went quietly!

I wonder if he could play as a backman where he can play from behind and punch the ball rather than as a forward playing in front and getting his head punched.

agreed, the only position he could play is CHB, because he is way too slow for full back or full forward and not tall enough for CHF.

Come to think of it he probably doesn't have the tank for CHB either!

Maybe back pocket playing on a slow-moving rangy third tall?
