If my memory serves me correctly I think it was someone by the nic of AXL ..... classic that thread.

Alan Richardson started with group and wasted the rest of their careers....

2014 St Kilda

GUNS

Nick Riewoldt

Age: 31. Games: 259. Position: Forward.

Modern-day champion shrugged off suggestions a knee injury would slow him down last year to take more marks than any other player in the comp and kick 50 goals — his highest tally since 2009. So we aren’t going to write him off this time. Still running opponents into the ground and setting the standard for a young squad.

Leigh Montagna

Age: 30. Games: 212. Position: Midfielder.

Running machine returned to the top echelon of AFL midfielders last year after being released from run-with roles he was given in Scott Watters’ first year in charge. Only Ablett, Pendlebury and Swan had more of the footy in 2013 and “Joey” ranked in the top 10 in the comp for handball receives, long kicks, effective kicks and inside-50s. With Nick Dal Santo gone he might get more attention from taggers this year.

News_Image_File: There were rumours during trade month one or both of Nick Riewoldt and Leigh Montagna could be leaving the club, but both have stayed put to guide the rebuild. Picture: Wayne Ludbey

Jack Steven

Age: 23. Games: 73. Position: Midfielder.

Pumped those little legs into the A-grade midfielder category in his fifth season, averaging 27 disposals a game, winning the best-and-fairest and generating a highlight reel of clearance bursts and running goals. Had the third-most running bounces in the competition and gives the club someone to build its next midfield around.

SuperCoach Special: Not cheap but can improve again on his career-best numbers last year (avg 110 a game). Unique midfield pick.

STARS

Lenny Hayes

Age: 34. Games: 277. Position: Midfielder.

It might be sacrilige to demote him from the “guns” category, but as his career winds down Lenny isn’t the dominant force he once was although he remains one of St Kilda’s most important players. Leads the way at the coalface and his attitude can never be questioned; the Saints desperately need to find midfielders to fill what will be a massive hole after he retires. It’s a travesty that he is likely to miss out on the farewell his mates Kosi, Blake and Milne got last year with the AFL scheduling St Kilda’s final home-and-away game for the year at Adelaide Oval.

News_Image_File: Lenny Hayes looks for an option upfield.

Sam Fisher

Age: 31. Games: 191. Position: Defender.

Two-time Trevor Barker medallist and former all-Australian who has been hit hard by injury, age and St Kilda’s lack of depth down back. When he did play last year Fisher was often forced to stand the opposition’s No.1 forward. The arrival of Luke Delaney and Josh Bruce should allow him to do what he does better than nearly anyone in the comp — chop off attacking moves and get the ball moving the other way.

FOOT SOLDIERS

Jarryn Geary

Age: 25. Games: 93. Position: Defender.

The Saints have a hole in the mid-20s age bracket but one 25-year-old they do have is a beauty. Unassuming but very effective, Geary can shut down the opposition’s best small forward and has shown the ability to win plenty of his own ball if given the chance, book-ending his 2013 season with 28 disposals against Gold Coast and 34 against Fremantle.

Sam Gilbert

Age: 27. Games: 140. Position: Midfielder.

Prone to the odd brain explosion but St Kilda needs his dash from defence. Was having a better year than most people realised last season before being cut down by a knee injury in Round 6 and might make a late start this year after being diagnosed with a foot stress fracture, a cruel blow after an impressive pre-season.

News_Image_File: Sam Gilbert makes a flying spoil over Kurt Tippett.

Sean Dempster

Age: 30. Games: 160. Position: Defender.

Suffered a big drop last year from his all-Australian form of 2012 but still a key member of the back six. Often plays above his height but is rarely beaten one-on-one. Hard to see him improving though at age 30.

David Armitage

Age: 25. Games: 92. Position: Midfielder.

Won’t ever be a superstar but a valuable member of the engine room who will take on more responsibility once the Saints enter LAL (life after Lenny). Averaged 22 touches a game last year and was No.2 at the club behind Steven for clearances and contested possessions.

Adam Schneider

Age: 29. Games: 200. Position: Forward.

No doubt the Saints are a better team when he’s playing but unfortunately his body is letting that happen less and less these days. Clever forward has great vision and goal sense but has played just 13 games in the past two seasons

James Gwilt

Age: 27. Games: 109. Position: Defender.

Undersized for a key defender, Gwilt is better suited playing on the second or third tall forward and may get to play that role this season. Has a great left boot and it would be nice to see him take more risks.

Dylan Roberton

Age: 22. Games: 57. Position: Defender.

Good find by recruiters to grab him from the Dockers. Can hold his own against mid-size forwards and provides plenty of run going the other way, picking up at least 17 disposals in half his games last year with a high of 27 against GWS. Doesn’t take any crap, either.

Farren Ray

Age: 27. Games: 176. Position: Midfielder.

Set to become a 200-game player which is nothing to be sneezed at, but not the star the Dogs thought he would be when they used pick No.4 in the 2003 draft. Solid contributor on a wing but Saints will hope their younger brigade starts putting him under pressure this year.

Shane Savage

Age: 23. Games: 56. Position: Midfielder.

Speedy goalkicking wingman who couldn’t cement a spot in Hawthorn’s best 22 but still managed 15 games for the premier, which is a pretty fair effort. Ditch the subs vest and watch him shine.

Jimmy Webster

Age: 20. Games: 11. Position: Defender.

Made an instant impression with his cool head under pressure when he came on as the sub in his first game in the middle of a barnstorming Carlton comeback. Nice kick. Likely to be a regular this year.

News_Image_File: St Kilda has boosted its key defender numbers this year.

Tom Hickey

Age: 23. Games: 24. Position: Ruck.

With Ben McEvoy gone, Hickey gets the chance to make the No.1 ruck role his own for the next decade. Has shown only hints of his talent so far, but the positive is he played his best footy when McEvoy wasn’t in the side.

Billy Longer

Age: 20. Games: 9. Position: Ruck.

Quit Brisbane which already had a pure tap ruckman and was snapped up by the Saints ... who already have a tap ruckman. Yet to see how he and Hickey will work together but St Kilda presumably has a partnership in mind. Great at getting first hand to the ball at stoppages but he has never shown much as a forward.

Rhys Stanley

Age: 23. Games: 37. Position: Key forward/defender

Has carried the “potential” tag since his debut in 2010 and still yet to deliver. Tall and quick, he was tried as a tall defender last year and looked all at sea at times, but has also struggled to make an impact as a forward. Make or break year.

I don't know how Scott Waters and then Alan Richardson screwed up 4 seasons with these guys
