A rebuild isn't required just continue to build.

The core of our next real tilt will still be the Ross/Newnes/Webster/Carlisle/Membrey/Dunstan generation, they are still only mid 20's.

Right now we need cool heads in a crisis - that famous footy quote comes to mind "nothing is ever as bad as it seems, and nothing is ever as good as it seems".

The club definitely needs a big list tweak at worst, way too many players below true AFL standard.

parkeysainter wrote: Mon 14 May 2018 2:03pm Sorry to say this, but the Saints are probably having to go into another (slight) rebuild and development phase again.

I think we need to bite the bullet and anyone that is over 25 and not up to being part of the next finals side needs to be traded out or delisted. It will cost us games and finals but so be it.

I honestly think we have a ton of good youngsters under 25 that will form the core so its not all doom and gloom. We need to get back into this draft (2nd and 3rd rounds). Possibly trade our 1st rounder for 2 x 1st rounders also. We need to add quality to the young fellas we picked up the last two years who are looking the goods and those that have been in the system for around 5 years now. E.g. Acres and Dunstan

It will be tough, but a bit of short term pain will provide long term benefits. Then we can look at trading in and picking up quality FA's at the end of 2020.

Sorry, but we just aren't a good footy side at the moment and its showing. The majority of these guys on our list over 25 are never going to take us anywhere.

LOL

No s*** Sherlock

I have been telling you nuff nuffs this for 9 months now.

Good to see some people have cottoned on to reality.

Geez Con...you are such a hero.

Even Socrates wasn't on your level pal.

I think we have to bite the bullet and target a couple mature age role players. Like Melbourne with Hibberd Lewis and Vince. Don't have to be stars just best 22.

I wouldn't call Lewis and Vince role players. They were both stars when they were recruited.

Bump.

We need to get rid anyone over 25-26 that aren't going to take us anywhere.

Rice showed glimpses of why he will become a good player. He is clean skilled and composed. Same as Hunter Clark - he definitely showed glimpses of his potential also. We need to get as many games into these kids as possible. Fellas like Dunstan, Ross, Acres, Gresham, Membrey, etc. who have been in the system for a while now are also part of that ideal side in 2-3 years. Get rid of our deadwood at season's end and hit the next 2 drafts like a tsunami. It has to be done.

Too bad we don't also have 2nd and 3rd round picks in the draft at the tail end of 2018, we aren't going to get much with 1st and 4th round picks.
Still, the people running the club know what they are doing.

- Trade for more picks with our existing players
- Use future picks to gain more in this draft
- Use our 1st rounder to get 2 x first rounders
There are ways and possibilities around getting into the upcoming draft heavily again.

I don’t know that it’s a rebuild per’se... just a mini clean out.

There are a number of players that simply aren’t going to make it and we need to put a line through them and a number that are ok but may not be good enough...

We don’t have the luxury of carrying so many passengers anymore.

Gone (like I said last week)
Armo
Weller
Wright
Gilbert
Joyce
Conellan
Pierce

Seriously under fire
Lonie
Minchington
Freeman
Goddard
Dmac

Worthy of being on an AFL list but not playing close to the standard that is expected of them or under other clouds
Billings
Longer
Hickey
Membrey
Paddy
Koby

That’s 15 players and 3 rookies with fairly reasonable concerns about them and far too many to work through in one off-season. If it was up to me, everybody in the first group would be out and that second group is largely dependent on what we can get in in terms of trades and free agents.

We desperately need to figure out the ruck and a way to get Membrey and Billings back to playing close to the standard that we know they’re capable of.

As for Paddy and Koby... it remains to be seen if either of these guys can make it back.

I agree with the gone list. Those players are not taking us anywhere.

I would still like to still see Freeman and Minchington get a gig next year. We need players like them two desperately as they have the speed and skills. Same as McKenzie who I reckon still needs another gig.
Maybe Goddard and Lonie might struggle to get a list spot in 2019. Its a bit hard to tell right now as I thought Lonie was ok last night. Goddard might come good.

Paddy and Stevens are concerns with concussion issues. Its hard to see if they can continue on long term, especially Stevens.
