Stanley is in the most solid form of his career so far this year… he's just not Nick Riewoldt.
No chance he'll be dropped on current form.

I can't believe you think that. I usually credit your posts as being most perceptive, but you are way off there. Stanley is a great guy, and could be a fantastic clubman but his form is appalling. Sorry...

I'm not saying he has been great… but his numbers this year are ahead of previous years…

More disposals, marks & hitouts

He's certainly not dominating by any stretch, but he is slowly building… he's just not going to be the superstar we'd hoped. If anyone needed the confidence from continuity it's this guy, so I think they'll persevere with him for quite a bit longer.

id like to see lee come in for maister
ross for armo
milera for savage
and one of bruce, roberton or simpkin for wright

4 changes is a lot, however 2 are forced and i am struggling to see what savage and maister have done to keep their spots

I agree with Dragit, I think he's been improving and with the exception of last week, where you would have had to be a magician to look good in our forward line, he has been serviceable. His confidence took a battering under Watters and he needs to be played back to form. Like when Kosi was along side Rooey, most of our play is not going to go there, he offers more than Kos because Kosi couldn't run by the end. He is actually pretty good defensively in the forward line and can lead out to clear the forward line for Rooey. Maister is more of a concern because his marks aren't sticking and he isn't great if the ball hits the deck.

You forgot to add he's also unreliable when shooting for goal. No, make that a terrible shot for goal. No wonder he spent time in defence last week. Next move is off the list.

That's Maister I'm referring to, not Rhys. Just in case Johnny Member is reading the thread.

Now see, this comment is exactly what I don't understand about some posters on fan forums such as this one. Kosi was a far better footballer than Rhys - and yes; this includes his final two seasons. His body was shot by the end and he was slow, but he could at least read the play and kick straight - straighter than Roo. Look, Rhys is obviously a great guy and is an outstanding club man, but I think a few weeks at Sandy might help him. He has had four weeks in the seniors - and will probably get another one this week - and that will help him get some continuity in his games. Maybe I am wrong. Prove it by showing me some evidence.

Well Ninja you got the first sentence correct - you fit squarely in that category. Kosi in his last 2 years - you have got to be joking. In fact I think you must be trying to wind everyone up - surely you aren't this stupid. Actually your comments are over the place and bordering on irrational. Prove it that they aren't by showing me some evidence.

Out Maister for Lee or anyone for that matter.

I once spent a year in Adelaide, I think it was on a Sunday.

I think people need to get realistic expectations for Rhys. For him, he is going well. He's a 2nd string ruckman who goes fwd and provides a third target.
Thats his job. He's not blitzing but he's perfectly adequate at that job. One of the least of our worries IMO.

My main worry is outside mids who can kick .
I think other clubs are going to target Joey this year - if u shut down Jack and Joey - we will struggle. This is why Savage is so important and so disappointing.

(Then after that my main worry is getting a new number 1 fwd to the club to replace Roo.)

If he goes back to Sandy and learns to mark and learns to kick then he'll deserve another game, tough ask though, obviously skills aren't a prerequisite to play well in the WAFL, and so he never bothered acquiring some, they are definitely important in the AFL, hence he struggles.

Since we have two threads on the same thing...

IN: Hickey, Shenton (upgraded), Milera, Lee, Ross
OUT: Longer (omit), Wright (inj), Savage (omit), Maister (omit), Armo (inj)

That's in order of direct replacements, no point saying take Maister and Stanley out, and bring in another two midfields, then we've got no forward line.
Also, Stanley tbh played ok on the weekend, Savage however did f'all and tbh I couldn't care if the NZ game is a week away, he's been well below par in all games bar possibly the WCE one, so reward those who are in content form.

If Shenton doesn't come in, go Simpkin, I want some hard nut in the side, I really like the way he goes about it. Schneider might get a go also, pure class up forward that guy. Would be nice to have someone other than Roo to kick it to.

The reason that my comments look all over the place is that I haven't used the quote function properly in my last post - it looks as if the quote I am responding to is what I am posting, so that explains that - my bad.
Evidence that my comments about Koschitzke are not irrational can easily be found in the club yearbook/AFL yearbooks 2012 and 2013. Check his stats for possessions and goals scored, which I think you will find will support my contention that even in his final two years Kosi offered more than Rhys is at present. He was not brilliant but was certainly a lot more vigorous than what is currently being served up.
Hickey however is doing really well in the ruck and we sorely missed him against the Crows, although I was happy to see Longer get an opportunity last Sunday.

Really? Here's Kosi:

2013: 6.6 disposals per game, 3.8 marks, 0.8 goals, 4.2 hitouts
2012: 9.1 disposals per game, 4.2 marks, 1.4 goals, 4.6 hitouts

Rhys this year:

2014: 11.5 disposals per game, 6.0 marks, 0.8 goals, 8.0 hitouts

Rhys has more touches, more marks, more hitouts, fewer/same goals. If they were both playing ruck/forward then Rhys is at least equal on the stats and possibly ahead.

Personally I think you're wrong. I think Kosi's contribution dropped off pretty dramatically in his last two years and Rhys has been improving each game this year - admittedly from a low base. Definitely worth persisting though, on the current trajectory he might just get up towards 10-15 touches, 5-10 marks and 1-2 goals a game. That would be a pretty useful contribution from a second tall forward who also plays in the ruck.

Rhys also has the equal 4th most contested marks in the AFL this year, 2 per game. More than Riewoldt.

I thought Kosi had really just gone past his best after 2011he couldn't chase and seeing the ball come back out last year with Milne and Kosi offering no resistance made me realise those guys were done. Kosi was a better player at his peak just was a long time ago. Rhys is an upgrade because he does chase and close out space when the opposition kick out.

Kosi was a #2 draft pick... What was Rhys 47?

I love the Kos, but his last couple of years were only possible because of bungled contracts we had written. His body retired in 2011.

Wright will be a definite out i'd say Billings in for him.

Maister is completely useless and shouldn't get another game. Just "providing a contest" while dropping easy marks and missing easy set shots can't be tollerated at the AFL level.

I'd like to see Stanley at chf ( similar to the Leigh Brown Coll. role) but I don't think he's quite smart enough.
Roo out of the goal square,I think he needs a rest,he looks buggared early in the games.
Bruce into back line for Beau, Gwilt as 3rd forward/swing man.
Billings for savage
Simpkin /roberton for Wright
someone for Armo
Maybe Hickey for Longer, not sure on Ess.ruck stock.

Of course, but I think it should factor into our expectations of players.

Rhys is probably building as you would expect a key position player taken in the late 40's.

The fact that he is 200cm and the fastest in side leads to unfair expectation... At this stage he's an average footballer with a few outstanding qualities. At the moment I don't think we have a better ruck/forward.

Don't think it's fair to drop Longer after only one game in a "rebuilding year". Even if he was our sub Saturday night, at least he is getting some senior experience. Armo, Wright are injured; fair enough, and Beau has struggled - so they are fair enough.

I don't think Longer would have even played if it wasn't for the absence of Hickey. And with Hickey likely to return, Longer is no longer required for the time being. He'll come back in when he's ready.
