Dawson V Rocca - The Rematch

Post: # 734335Post Bowey Boy »

Good article on Zac at The Age. If Zac did get the job on Rocca and stitch him up, it would be the making of him. I would just love to see Rocca taken off the ground to some bronx cheers after being held scoreless by Zac !!

I think Zaccy's doing a great job this year, but to play on Rocca and beat him (or even just to hold his own) will be the making of him IMO. His confidence will soar and he'll know he's made it. I hope he gets the chance on Monday. Good luck Zac!

Do we think Zac is probably asking for the match up? 8-)

It would be a great sight to see him walk over to Rocca prior to the first bounce... I'm sure Saints fans will give him a cheer every time he denies the big oaf the ball.

And then give him a big grounding hip-and-shoulder like he did to BBB in round one...!

Zac will fancy himself, that's for sure.

In the best form of his career against someone in the worst form of their career and a shadow of their former self.

Retribution.

Payback for Dawson on Rocca

May 12, 2009

THIS time Zac Dawson ran off the ground a winner, and the ironic cheers were reserved for his opponent, Anthony Rocca.

Dawson came full circle as an AFL defender last night when he played a decisive role in St Kilda's 88-point thrashing of Collingwood at Etihad Stadium, and expunged a personal thrashing from three years ago.

In round two, 2006, Dawson, then with Hawthorn, became fodder for Rocca, who booted eight goals against him, including six in the third quarter.

The mismatch was made all the more humiliating because of Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson's refusal to shift Dawson off Rocca, reasoning that the lesson the young man would learn would be invaluable in his football development.

Dawson never got a decent shot at redemption with the Hawks, as he was axed at the end of last year after 14 games.

But having been given a lifeline by the Saints, Dawson, now 23 and physically far more developed than the sapling Rocca out-muscled, is an accomplished player in the league's stingiest defence.

He held his own in an early wrestling contest which set the tone, made several good spoils and kept Rocca to four disposals, one mark and one behind in the first half, when the contest was already over.

Rocca booted a goal from a somewhat dubious mark in the first minute of the third quarter, but then undid that good work by sending his next two shots out of bounds on the full, while a third kick fell short.

St Kilda fans, although outnumbered, delighted in giving Rocca the sort of Bronx cheers Magpie fans did three years ago.

But Rocca was not the only forward out of sorts, as Travis Cloke's rough start to the season continued.

He gathered only 12 disposals, did not boot a goal and was beaten by Sam Gilbert.

The Saints' faith in Dawson has borne fruit, as he has become a more-than-useful part of an in-form back line.

Was a great night for payback, MG sticking it up Malthouse and Dawson owning Rocca, all topped off with a sweet, sweet victory over the filth

And, he really seems to be enjoying himself, which is nice to see. Did anyone else notice his nice touch at the end of the game? One young fan went home happy.

The 50m was against Goddard who said "he didn't F#%&ing touch him"

but otherwise I agree, no way that was a mark.

I actually thought Zac looked really nervous and that Rocca was quite lively. He was the only forward out there for the Pies that resembled a challenge, had he kicked straight, he may have had 3-4 which would have been a good return

that being said, Zac coralled him to take his marks around the boundary line hence his inaccuracy.
Don't think Rocca was disgraced

Great to see Goddard is slowly learning not to be so abusive to the umpires  :D

pure charity that free, most unfair on zac and his reaction showed what it meant to him - being denied a clean-sheet. He still well and truly earned his retribution tho!

I was thrilled for Zac last night.
