Where's Armo at?

Post: # 725263Post d roit »

Plenty of talk about the emergencies this week, Maxxie, X and Goose, i was just wondering whats the current situation with armitage? Is he going to get games this year? I really rate this kid but it seems that there is a big list of players ahead of him at the moment. After all though, he was a no.9 pick in whats proven to be a relatively strong draft.

Thoughts?

You said it -there's a few in front of him, and with the team sitting on top of the ladder, he will need to put in a BOG here and there in the VFL to let the coach know that he is putting his hand up for selection. I think RL really wants strong and fit players, and the guys who have a fitness or injury issue will find it hard to break in.

I hope I'm wrong, but I saw very little in Armo over the least 2 years to suggest he will make it.

In the next few drafts we will need to be prioritising mids and look to pick up a couple of quality Talls.

armo's still got until the end of next year at a minimum - he'll be 22 and a half then. but as yet i don't think the penny's dropped for him that there's much harder work required at senior level.

he's almost exactly similar to montagna. have a look at joey's career:

2002: 1 game, 4.0 disp/game, 2.0 tackles/game, 0 goals
2003: 12 games, 10.4 disp/game, 1.5 tackles/game, 12.3 goals
2004: 9 games, 11.2 disp/game, 2.8 tackles/game, 9.2 goals
2005: 8 games, 15.1 disp/game, 2.4 tackles/game, 6.3 goals
2006: 22 games, 19.1 disp/game, 3.7 tackles/game, 12.14 goals
2007: 21 games, 23.9 disp/game, 3.6 tackles/game, 10.12 goals
2008: 25 games, 22.7 disp/game, 3.3 tackles/game, 12.11 goals
2009: 3 games, 25.0 disp/game, 8.3 tackles/game, 2.1 goals

at the start of 2006 he hit his straps and started popping up in the top few for disposals every week. this was the point at which he realised you have to work hard for the entire two hours. since then, he's been a-grade. he was just 23 at that point.

here's armo's first couple of seasons:

2007: 3 games, 6.7 disp/game, 2.3 tackles/game, 0 goals
2008: 13 games, 10.2 disp/game, 3.3 tackles/game, 10.6 goals

practically identical. he played a couple of games but did nothing in his first season. in his second season he played about half the games, kicked some goals but didn't really get into the show. he's not yet 21. this year he should play about half the games again and hopefully improve his KPIs, and by next year he should be fit enough and in a position to really start working hard and getting into games. by the year after he should be a regular.

you gotta remember, dal santos or goddards, who are ensconced in the side at 18/19/20, are really rare.

Excellent work on the stats.
Fingers crossed it pans out that way, Armo doesn't have Joey's pace, but he does have that natural ability to find the footy, just drifts in and out of games, does it in the twos as well.
Consistency and focus the key for him.

Armitage missed most of the preseason through injury and seems to have started pretty well with Sandringham. You can't judge him harshly for not being in the side right now. He'd probably be a walk-up start for at least half the teams in the league. He just happens to be a midfielder in a team that has Ball, Dal Santo, Goddard, Gram, Hayes, Montagna and Ray, with Gwilt, Geary and McQualter all playing pretty well right now. All he can do is play his best and hope for an opportunity, like everyone else not in the 22 at the moment.

Would be playing in the midfield of about 10 other AFL teams at the moment based on his VFL form and pre-season form before his injury.

Expect him to come into the side and then stay there until the premiership ... 8-)

Agree. Also Max & X should be in our best side + maybe Goose and Dempster when right.

We really are humming at the moment.

You would think that if our players play as ruthlessly as they did last week against Freo that there wouldn't be any changes to the team for the game against Port, so Armo might have to be patient until at least the Bulldogs game.
