So round 1 summary - the good and the bad

Post: # 535708Post maverick »

Good
We got the 4 points
We won another close game under fierce pressure
Tackling and attack at the ball in 1st qtr
Kosi and Roo worked well together
King and Gardiner both played well enough
Max got through and played well
Ball got through and played OK
X got through and played well
We beat a good team and got them out of the way
Raph's defending
L Fisher

Bad
Kosi's kicking for goal
Inability to kick more than 6 goals for the game - 2 after qtr time - bad kicking or not
tackling after qtr time
King's overhead marking
Raph's awareness and urgency
C Gardiner - needs to improve
Schneider - hopefully it was a Sydney thing, pre season was good
Gilbert - struggling down back needs to be released up field (a bit) to regain some confidence

Try and keep the replies on topic...please...

Do we really need this many threads?

I've never really liked Gilbert as a key defender. I'd rather see him on the wing or half forward flank.

Its a summary, trying to get away from the Dal and Raph arguments and get back to the game itself, don't like it don't read it, its not like the heading was misleading or anything

OK no probs
Just didn't want to trawl through pages of Dal and Raph to get others opinions on good and bad from round 1.

Saw the replay this morning. I actually didn't think it was that bad of a game sure it wasn't the highest scoring game but we just lacked the polish to finish off. Our first quarter was excellent, we chased and tackled and forced the Swans to make numerous turn overs in our forward 50.

The Swans never get blown away, remember one of the commentators saying their biggest losing margin was 30 odd points or something. If we apply that pressure to other teams we will be in good stead.

Having Fraser back in the team will help with the quickness of the play as he we at times didn't have a target up the ground. Sydney shut down our runners out of defense pretty well Gram didn't have any influence, Fisher provided a few runs out but was down on other games.

Was good to win, but I really hope that we can come out and absolutely smash Carlton, these close games are driving me mad!

you ain't seen nothing yet Huzzard
wait till the posters get REALLY excited
we get one post on most players and one on each of the opposition and several on the coaches :P

then they start on the food and the seating :::

which is why I was holding of putting one up on X but golly I love his style and his second and third efforts and the spoils in the centre of the ground

but wish he wouldn't try to knock himself out three times every game- He'd be past the 100 games along with Kosi if they weren't quite so fearles.- X's tackling has improved in leaps and bounds over the past 18 mths but he is still slight- which gives him speed and agility But it's making those tackles stick thats then tough.

and knowing he's a good guy away from the game just increases my admiration.

I was happy with the win, we drove over from adelaide sat morn and drove back this morn(sunday)
Went to the Victory room after and waited for about 2 hours for Dal, CJ, Geary and Sam Gilbert to come back. All of them spoke very well. Dal said Ross gave them heaps after the game so thta is good:)
We then walked to the Casino and I won 1400 playing Blackjack :) good old CROWN :)

Hope to see some of you round 6 over here We need the support

* standing up and winning another close game
* no significant injuries
* having 2 ruckmen both play fairly good games
* keeping the opposition to a miserable score
* match time for Max & Bally
* very good debut match from Geary
* sufficient depth that 2 first choice players could be replaced without obvious detriment to the team

Geez noddy, 1400 can pay for the family to fly over next week, 2 games for the price of one    well done, bet you've still got a smile up.

It's a shame ignorance isn't painful

Who is the opponent that beat Gilbert.....not sure Heath Grundy had a major impact.....and he beat O'Loughlin whilst he stood him...so I am not sure he struggled as a key back, HOWEVER,

he is struggling with the footy with his confidence and decision making, which means he would be a liability upfield - not playing well enough atm....

at 194cm, he is not clean enough at ground level to be a flanker, and his kicking skills are not as damaging enough (eg, goddard, fiora, x, dal, montagna, harvey, gram who either kick with depth or accuracy)

I will say it again
He has played CHB at Southport and for Qld
and FB for Casey....and has been excellent....the only thing stopping him in the AFL is strength, which can only be gained over time....

He will end up an attacking CHB

he's so versatile that he will ultimately be able to hold down any of the above. it's just a mild dose of second year blues that he's enduring atm

Grundy had a reasonable impact, kicked a goal and won a couple of one on ones. Gilbert didn't get thrashed but did struggle for mine.

Hit up a good pass to Milne at CHF in the second term in traffic, which I thought was good.

Agree on the strength thing, and am hoping for the CHB thing...
