dal's dad says cousins should lose brownlow

Post: # 479996Post bigcarl »

herald sun

LIAM HOULIHAN

The father of the AFL player who Ben Cousins beat to the Brownlow by two votes wants the fallen Eagle to lose his medal

Nick Dal Santo's dad Peter said he didn't expect his son to get the award, but Cousins should not keep it.

In 2005 Cousins took the best and fairest with 20 votes, fellow Eagle bad boy Daniel Kerr received 19 and wholesome Saint Dal Santo 18.

"Rather than passing it (the medal) on there should be a black hole, like with (drug cheat) Marion Jones," said Mr Dal Santo.

"That makes a stronger statement."

His mother Eileen said Nick had the view that he wouldn't deserve the medal.

She said that as a footy parent she sympathised with the Cousins family.

"If it happened to us we would be devastated," she said.

Mrs Dal Santo said no-one knew the Eagles players were on drugs at the time of the 2005 Brownlow.

Have met Nicks mother and she is quality person.Don't think it is anything to be embarrassed by...some will have the view that Cousins brownlow was somewhat tainted...however I don't think he should lose it.

The best outcome would be Nick to win in his own right in the next year or two ...with just a half decent season he will always be a chance as he is a proven vote catcher and his balance and poise make him stand out from the pack.

Needs to get super fit and physically stronger[to outrun and shake the taggers] and he could do anything

Well after reading the article i was a bit shocked. But to tell you the truth we cant ascertain if cousins was under the influence during that period! However, if that was the case and the medal was tainted the best option would to forfeit the medal ... but i dont think dally would be inclined to recieve the medal after that !

Looks a bit suss. I wonder if they were chatting to someone informally at a barbie or something, not realising what they were saying would be reported. I have also met Nick's family and they are lovely people. Very down to earth and sensible people who would not embarass NDS intentionally.

IMHO should be taken away from Cousins, and then not given to Kerr as he is also a blight on the game with his drug related activities. That leaves the Brownlow going to Dal Santo. Never has there been a more worthy winner I must say!

i think what has happened here is that the reporter has talked to mr dal santo before the latest charges against cousins were dropped.

however i agree with mr dal santo that both the cousins brownlow and the eagles premiership are tainted by cousins's use of performance enhancing drugs

the fact that he has voluntarily entered a rehabilition centre that specialises in the treatment of methamphetamine addiction negates the need for a positive test imo.

also, if you do your research, you'll find that amphetamines (including meth) and other stimulants (such as cocaine) are performance enhancing ... that's why they are banned internationally in sports.

they give you almost superhuman endurance and the confidence to feel like you can run through a brick wall. sound familiar? sounds like cousins to me.

but i am going over old ground here. this has been detailed by myself and others in many previous posts so i'm just repeating myself over and over and over ...

From what I've read it's hardly consensus opinion among medical practitioners that amphetamines or any other stimulant (inluding caffeine)are performance enhancing. Particularly in a sport where in a sport where one has to concentrate and make quick decisions. In any case, the potential damage sustained from prolonged use would far outweigh any short-term benefits.

that much has never been in dispute. long-term these type of drugs will do your head in big-time and your body, too.

however the short-term benefits of amphetamines - increased endurance and stamina, increased confidence, better concentration and awareness, encouragement of risk-taking behaviour - are all desirable attributes on the football field or any other sport in which you need the ability to concentrate and make quick decisions

troops on both sides during WW2 used amphetamines because their leaders found that soldiers could go for longer and harder on them. it is all pretty well documented if you do a bit of web research on the subject. in fact the US airforce still uses them today to boost the performance of fighter pilots.

i'd ask you if you think our blokes in 2004 or 2005 could have done with better endurance, more confidence, increased concentration and awareness, more willingness to take risks etc, etc, etc.

cousins won his brownlow by only a couple of votes. the eagles won their premiership by a point. doesn't take much of an advantage to make a difference.

here's another way of looking at it. would it be okay for a horse to win the melbourne cup if it was doped up on some sort of amphetamine or other stimulant? i'd suggest not.

in benny's drug-addled mind the short-term benefits might outweigh the long-term downside

now we have an expert ... the doctor who designed cousins's rehabilitiation program ... saying that methamphetamines are indeed performance enhancing and that many US athletes also have an addiction problem with the same substances

all i can say is that i'm not surprised that the eagles and the afl have attempted to wash their hands of cousins and the whole affair. they just want it to go away ...

... if i was in their position i'd be wanting the same thing

Ever since Cousins won the brownlow i was saying the same thing the Dal Santos have said in the article. it is suppose to be for the best player one can argue that point as to whether Cousins was the best player in 2005. but the second part of the medal has me concerned how on earth can anyone say that he is the fairest player in the competition when he has been as high as a kyte for years.
Cousins has brought that club down you only have to look at the incidents the 2nd place getter in the brownlow has had too see how much Cousins has destoryed that club.

knowing Dal he wouldn't want a tained medal but in my honest opinion he rightly deserves it.

Embarrassing is the right word.

To those who are actually condoning the idea of taking the Brownlow off Cousins;

Pull your heads out of your arse.

A) No EVIDENCE to suggest that Cousins has EVER been on drugs.

B) Dal Santo wouldn't take it anyway.

Any increase in endurance and stamina comes as a result of the increased confidence. Amphetamines don't increase the body's ability to deal with the stresses of physical activities, only the brain's. Furthermore, a player might think they're performing better when they're actually not. Self-medicated players are unlikely to use correct dosages and could be using street drugs rather than pharmacy medication. Their concentration levels are unlikely to be increased. More likely, they'll be fidgety and irritable.

Cousins may have believed drugs were improving his performance, but I don't see a lot of evidence that they actually did. When did he start taking them? What did they do that improved his performance? We're talking about an athlete who has always been in the elite in terms of his aerobic capacity. He's always been elite in terms of his ball-winning ability. The amount of contested ball and clearances he gets has declined over the years. Other than a spike in 05, his kicking efficiency has also declined. I see no reason to believe that drugs had anything to do with the changes in performance. To me, the development of Judd and Kerr had a much greater effect on what Cousins was able to do on the field than anything drugs might have been doing.

kerr is also what you might call "troubled". was in strife a couple of years ago for trying to get ketamine, a drug sometimes used by amphetamine users trying to get some sleep after being "up" for days.

judd, i believe, is a cleanskin and the eagles party culture might have been a reason why he wanted to make a clean break from the club. he is capable of superhuman performances without appearing to need a "boost"

If NDS could show half of either kerr or Cousins commitment to the contest instead of flitting around like a casual observer in fancy pants he might eventually win his own medal.

Until such time 2 well worn phrases comes to mind -

Wake up!

Also ran!
