97 Brownlow arguement !!

Post: # 470616Post Eastern »

It angers me every time I hear that Chris Grant was robbed of the 97 Brownlow. Chris Grant was a victim of circumstance in 97, as was Robert Harvey.

I remember that it was fairly early that season (Rd 8-10 ?) that Collo put Grant up before the tribunal. Some of us still remember that the umpires refused to make a report, so Collo did it himself.

Earlier that season Chris Grant received 3 Brownlow votes under very dubious circumstances. There was one game where he received 3 Votes for a 3 kick, 6 handball game. In the same game Grant's direct opponent, David Neitz kicked 7 goals

People who believe in fairytales chose to ignore these facts as they would destroy the fairytale.

ROBERT HARVEY WON THE 97 BROWNLOW FAIRLY & SQUARELY

Chris Grant was merely a victim of the degree of honesty that was in the game at that time !!

The rumours back then were the umpies were peed off about some matter and still gave him votes after he was suspended.

Not quite.

Grant polled 3 votes in Round 4 of that year, when he had 3 kicks, 1 mark and 6 handballs. It was before he was suspended, but was absolutely ridiculous.

In that same game, David Neitz kicked 7 goals on Grant.

So playing full-back, Grant received 3 votes as the best player on the ground for conceding 7 goals and earning 3 kicks himself.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Had a look on the stats sight, and couldnt believe my eyes

Harvs brownlow through and through!!

If you compare the games banger polled 3 votes in that year
3 vs Port - 38 touches
3 vs WCE - 35 " "
3 vs adel - 43 " "
3 vs Haw - 40 ""
3 vs Coll - 36 " "
3 vs Syd - 35 " "
3 vs Port - 40 " "

what a machine, scary to think that 98 was even better

Sorry Chris Grant, champion player you may have been, all the respect in the world, Harvs is just in a different league

i cant say i care that grant retired...thats just me...

the only reason he is considered good is because the teams he played in had sub-par and below average cores...

Great thread! It infuriates me also. People forget the incident involved Grant fair dinkunm jobbing Holland in the face. End of story. He was lucky to only get one week.

Update on Harvs Total...

Gary Dempsey - 218.5 (adj for double votes)
Sir Robert - 212 (including the 7 votes this year)

So just 7 more votes - same as this year - and then - the record!

In my eyes it was an issue for 12 months. People saying that Harvey didnt deserve a brownlow.............As banger does he responded in great fashion by winning it in 98 and shuting all those people up.

Harvs better not only poll 6 votes next year! We can't have Sir Robert retire half a vote off from being the greatest ever Brownlow vote getter.

Tim Watson robbed Harvey and Burke from getting more votes with his theory that they should not be played in the midfield. What a mistake that was! And that is just after Harvey's blitzed everyone in the 1998 Brownlow.

Grant was a awesome player at his peak, don't forget he almost won the 1996 brownlow and missed out on votes in a game where he dominated.

The grant Brownlow talk doesn't bug me as much as the Doggies we would have beaten the saints in the Grand Final talk. How can they accurately say that they choked in the PF so what is to say they wouldn't have in the GF!

Arguments that Grant should have won the brownlow in 2007, are a joke.

His season was no where near the quality as Harvey's was, He averaged basically half of Harvey's disposals, only kicked 19 goals more, and overall didn't play anywhere near as well as Harvey.
Rd 4 V Melbourne. Chris Grant - 3 Kicks - 1 Mark - 7 Handballs - 10 Disposals - 0 Goals - 0 Behinds - 3 Hitouts - 1 Tackle. 3 Brownlow Votes
What a joke!

There should be no argument. Who has the 1997 Brownlow Medal?

I actually thought Grant was good without being excellent in 1997.

I thought Harvey's 1997 season was the best by a midfielder, ever - surpassing 1998 (despite the polling difference) quite easily.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
