new article on maguire/baker contracts

Post: # 459974Post 4ever_saint »

Three clubs will chase Judd with great energy. More than likely it will be in vain and not because they can't offer a fortune but more obviously because they can offer him very little of what he left in Perth.

St Kilda has the money and the playing list and would earnestly trade to find the draft picks it would hope might tempt West Coast. But while Judd will listen intently to what St Kilda can provide, he is concerned that the Rod Butterss board must face an election in November.

A further complication is that his manager, Paul Connors, has been unable to strike deals with two St Kilda players in his stable - Matt Maguire and Steven Baker. It is believed that Connors is frustrated that the club's chief executive, Archie Fraser, cannot complete the negotiations.

EDIT: NEW ARTICLE!
Appeared on realfooty today re: maguire + judd

Further, with Connors also looking after the affairs of Maguire, and captain Luke Ball among others at St Kilda, protracted negotiations between the Saints and their centre half-back have stalled.

Connors declined to comment other than to confirm that there have been no recent dealings over Maguire. Richmond and at least one other club are understood to have expressed interest in the 23-year-old, who made an unexpectedly swift comeback this year from a badly broken leg he suffered in round 18 of the 2006 season.

I'm pretty sure that Archie and Ken Sheldon do the contract negotiations now.

yeh i dont get it...

they are required players...

and its not as if both would be requring major pay increases due to their performance either

and considering out 4 retirements we have enough cash in the bank for even a small increase

its getting strange...

i had heard much similiar to saintbrat, that no contracts could fully be negoitiated until maguire and montagna (not sure about baker) were back in the country. i assume that the boys will be back by the brownlow so we will probably find out more in the next week or so.

The head coach of an AFL footy club should be more involved than anyone in contracts.

More than RL appears to be and less than GT was?

The head coach has to dictate who is on his list.

I find it unfathomable than Sheldon and Fraser are effectively in control of who plays under Ross Lyon.

Are you seriously suggesting that AF/KS are not getting input from RL over who he wants at the Club?

Or are you just being mischievious?

You pay people to do certain jobs in a club, contracts are the job of managment. RL would obviously say to KS and AF for example.."Macguire is a required player, over to you guys to sort out the contract" he would also be telling players that he requires them and those players would be telling their managers, who in turn would be negotiating a deal with the club management, who are obviously not going to automatically say yes to what's put in front of them, which will be a blown-out figure. From there on its negotiation time both ways.

FWIW, Grant Thomas was probably more qualified to be negotiating player contracts than he was to coach.

Arguably had better results doing it than coaching too.

I'm not suggesting anything. Or being mischievious.

I don't know how much input they get from Lyon - but I can't understand why Ken Sheldon is even involved.

Lyon should represent the footy dept., and Fraser (god help us) represent the financial aspect of the club.

whats ken sheldon doing there??

Thats his Job thats what footy operation managers do.. It's the same at every club in the AFL. Coaches job isn't to sign players (one of the reasons tommo was sacked), obviously thou he dows have input into it.

Why is he required there? Aside from it being the same at every club.

Why does anyone other than Ross Lyon and his assistants, have input into who is on his list?

Rodger,
There is a big difference between nominating who you want on the list and actually sorting through the details of contract negotiation.

I would have thought that the way this process works is that
1. RL on behalf of the coaches decide which players they wish to keep
2. AF/KS go about negotiating those players' contracts when they are up for renewal.
