Rod Butterss pushing the AFL!!
Butterss is again re-igniting a push for the AFL to play a match on Good Friday and is again requesting a Saints V Collingwood match...
Personally I feel there is little chance with the Channel 7's Good Friday appeal that has been a tradition for many years, we had more of a chance when Channel 9 had the rights...
What are your thoughts??

I'd rather we band with Carlton - they'll want their slice of the organised blockbuster pie (only Collingwood x2, Essendon and Melbourne have one), plus there's a healthy....dislike/disdain...from each side.
75,000 at the MCG, assured. And please, can we have it at the MCG?
Either way, it has to happen. This is our chance.
Good Friday can be honoured by playing on this day - imagine the AFL offering to give $1 for every patron who attends to the Good Friday Appeal.
Could be huge.

It's a fair point but surely one that's up to the individual?MC Euro Gusto wrote:i am not a religious man but feel strongly that good friday should be a day of rest
Given that most codes of sport around the world schedule something for Good Friday (even Serie B in Italy) isn't it precious/presumptive to impose rest when many choose not to rest and reflect?
Or even believe?

<shrug> if they give it to us, they'll take it off us in a few years.
remember the dusk games? we pioneered that, but it was taken off us?
the guys HERE organised the wooden spoon tradition, now through eddie marketting, its collingwood who did it first.
we get spooned by the AFL more often than a $10 hooker on saturday night at the cross.
the AFL would love st kilda to just die and go away like fitzroy and southmelbourne.

Yeah, I understand, but how much rest is 'rest'?MC Euro Gusto wrote:i am not a religious man but feel strongly that good friday should be a day of rest
I work on a Good Friday. That ain't rest.
AFL has a statement to make and it can do a good thing for the community. And this club can lead the way.
I'd make it against Carlton, for certain.

Very true.Dan Warna wrote:who cares about good friday anyway.
most people dont even get overtime if they are on AWAs.
its just anohter working day for most lower income and service staff.
But I'd take a day of leave to go to the footy - and so would everyone else
St Kilda vs Carlton, MCG, Good Friday 2007.

The NRL play on Good Friday...
So we are not setting a precedent, but again...
There will NO doubt be problems with Channel 7 with the television rights on Friday night
I feel that Channel 7 WILL not give up the Royal Childrens Hospital Good Friday Appeal for a footy match....That's my opinion...
They will not GIVE their right to a rival network...
IMO this will have to wait until the new bidding and I really don't know why Butterss is pushing this agenda now...
FWIW I feel the club has the right to deal with a club that first agreed with St Kilda's original push a few years back, AND THAT WAS COLLINGWOOD.
So really, this thread is not about who we should play, but more on if there is a chance of it happening...
But, again, I just don't see why Butterss is pushing this agenda now, whilst Channel 7 have the rights (or am I missing something??)

looks like Roddy didn't get his way on this, with the Carlton Hawthorn match recently proposed for Good Friday.
Any ideas why Roddy's voice wasn't seriously listened to by the AFL?
Westaway take note - it's not just getting the financials and spending ship shape, but having some say in how the AFL do things helps also!

Agree totally. yes we are a predominately christian country, however this should have nothing to do with it.aussierules0k wrote:Good Friday is a RELIGIOUS day of celebration. We pride ourselves on being a multicultural society. Should all the other religious days of all the other religions be "off limits"?
Those who want to practice religion should be in church, those who want to go to the footy should be able to. If some ppl don't wanna go due to their god, so be it. Why should my life be interrupted by a group of people that believe unbelievable things? I'm sorry... men don't rise from the grave. If any of these ridicules religious claims could be proven, everyone would be a Christian. Can anyone prove that a man rose from the grave, or that another man parted a sea, or that a man can convert water into wine and walk on water?
The most conservative, pious and religious of all christian countries, the USA have football on Christmas Day (NFL) which is just as holy as Good Friday.
We play football on Anzac Day (well two teams do anyway ) and this could be construed as offensive to the soldiers that died in just and unjust conflicts, however it is not seen that way.
Good Friday can be observed, but I am sure we would have footy on Muslim, Jewish, Shinto, Hindu, or Buddist religious days without batting an eyelid.

my comments weren't really about the merits of Good Friday Footy - since Ronnie carked it, the AFL has is now likely to play Good Friday Footy from the reports.....it's really about how RB's suggestion has been conveniently ignored by the AFL in favour of the Carlton/Hawks plan at this stage...
BTW I'm all for Good Friday Footy....as for the religious thing, most conservative/progressive strains don't mind people of other religions attending services/events etc, it's only the orthodox/fanatical elements that ruin it for everyone!

Christianity may be the chief fairy tale believed, but religion has noting to do with the state.
