More ankle surgery after more damage done. That's his season over. The club will need to be super cautious with his rehab. It worries me that he may have the kind of damage that could be career threatening

I know he had a screw inserted with the original surgery, which then got removed about a month ago because the surgeon thought it was causing more harm than good. It has been giving him a lot of pain and he couldn't train.

I could very well be wrong, but my recollection of Fergus Watts was a hip/upper femur fracture that was of "car accident" proportions....

I can understand screws inserted in your jaw or upper body or arm, but thiis is his ankle we are talking about. There's a lot of weight and stress on that joint. Doesn't make sense to be trying to rush the healing.

Is this a case of player want to return to footy too quickly, or doctors and surgeons giving the wrong advice?

If it's the latter then James and the club should seek compensation.

The treatment depends on the exact nature of the damage noting the complexity of the ankle

So screws and plates can be inserted, some later removed if causing ongoing discomfort

There is also ligament and tendon damage leading to calcification - so rigorous physio the result

What you do not realise is, following surgery and rehabilitation where the “feeling” in the ankle was before because the change in flexibility can be minimal

Then there is compensation which can lead to further complications

The complexity of the ankle is the driver

The one thing you can offer is that, if you are an elite sportsperson you have access to the best of management so the best chance of a satisfactory recovery

If not then it is down to self discipline - so keeping up the exercise regime such that you have satisfactory mobility

Missed the entire season

Played 2007 in the VFL and had the mobility of a Super Rules footballer and was delisted at the end of that season

He played some VFA after that but really just stood in the goals square and took marks. He was done at 25
