If those midfields lined up against each other in an intra club

Owens, Windhager, Dow, Henry, Phillipou, Wilso

Vs

Steele, Crouch, Ross, Jones, Sinclair, Clark

It would be a 20 goal rout

Agree though it should be a mix of old and young

They don't take into consideration injuries, like the ones which cost Membrey and King most of their respective seasons.

Or Steele's injury which probably should have been season ending with an operation, but instead he came back and fought through the pain to lead us into the finals. The man is a giant! (forgive the pun).

I do agree that Carlton and GWS have great lists, and like Melbourne and the Bulldogs, have probably underachieved so far (although the Dees and the Dogs have at least got one premiership each).

To my way of thinking our young team in the first ten rounds, and a more mature version in the final three rounds before finals, took a giant leap forward.

A lot of talent has left in the off season, however most of them were not playing much in the past two-three seasons, so their leaving may have little impact.

Because saying they underestimated us is an admission that they got it wrong.
There's more to this.

Our wins/losses defy the statistics, we are an outlier.

Teams are playing the champion data stats like they're the bible. That is the main source of data, especially with the soft cap in place.

Ross and Co. are trying to circumvent this and win games of footy and hopefully premierships by defying the current status quo on stats.

Collingwood have done this (skewed stats to win/loss) by focusing on their game closeouts and winning every close one they were in. So the first 3Q stats don't really matter.

It's a ballsy move but could well land a premiership and rewrite the stat weightings.
+1
Very perceptive post!

I hope our opponents rate us the same way champion data does.

Why?

Would you rather a team fear us or underrate us

Professional sportsman don’t go easy on teams they don’t respect
They belt them

History proves that's untrue. Bulldogs vs West Coast? Arsenal vs Fulham? Girona vs Barcelona?

It's an extremely common narrative within any competitive environment to not underrate your opposition.

I'd much rather teams walk into a game vs St Kilda thinking their playing the 15th best team, rather than the best.

But of course we know that wouldn't happen, because you can't underrate your opposition.

I think history would suggest favourites win most often.

Upsets happen, but they are called upsets because they weren’t expected

Reason you’re probably happy being underdog is because there is less expectation

You’re very happy if you win, but if you lose it’s oh well it was expected

The pressure is there when you’re expected to win

And if you lose you’re gutted

Professional AFL footballers play in teams. They can't belt anyone on their own.

Geelong will be fearing us more than we will be fearing them. They currently only have 2 really high rated players and they are at either end of the ground.

12 J. Sinclair STK Mid 96.9
25 T. Stewart GEE Gen Def 94.9
27 J. Cameron GEE Key Fwd 94.3
29 R. Marshall STK Ruck 93.3
35 T. Hawkins GEE Key Fwd 92.8
49 M. Owens STK Gen Fwd 90.5
60 P. Dangerfield GEE Mid 89.2
63 J. Steele STK Mid 88.6
64 C. Wilkie STK Key Def 88.6
98 M. Blicavs GEE Mid 83.8
110 G. Miers GEE Gen Fwd 82.1
116 B. Crouch STK Mid 80.9
117 T. Atkins GEE Mid 80.9
123 T. Stengle GEE Gen Fwd 79.6
125 M. Wood STK Mid 79.1

One team is rising and the other is aging. No guarantee we will win at Geelong, but we have nothing to lose or fear.

Lockett belted most of his opponents and respected none,
but his team at Stkilda lost more than it won.
