Disappointing to hear that Nick Coffield has decided to play for Footscray as I felt we had yet to see him play after long term injury. However, as the saying goes 'that's football' and so we shouldn't agonise over what he might have been, time to move on. It's likely he could see that it would be hard for him to break into St Kilda's best 23 with Nasiah Wanganeen Milera taking a stranglehold on HB/wing and he probably lacks the pace to play midfield.

It's been said that the club was going to make substantial changes to the list during the current off-season, so although they offered him a new contract it was probably below the level Coffield wanted, which suggests they weren't all that keen to keep him and are happy to see him go.

Lehtlean mentioned in an interview this week that the club was aware that in order to bring quality players in they would have to let some who are borderline go, every club has to make these sorts of decisions at this time of year.

People seem to have him pigeon-holed as a half back only. I have him down as a potentially elite player and good players, well you find a way to get them in the team.

Let's hope he doesn't absolutely tear it up for the Dullbogs. I fear that he might.

Yep, sensible post. Saints have said they want to really use the draft this year, only have an average hand in the draft, and need to bring in Henry, Dow and possibly others. The Coffield pick we get may be used for Henry, and not dilute our draft hand. We would be trying to strengthen our draft hand further, hence the Gresham/Shiel deal, also some talk about a salary dump for Nick Haines for another draft pick.

Tough decisions need to be made.

Ya think Tom Highmore will get a crack - or should I say, more if a crack , a glimpse, a peep …at playing firsts now?

There are whispers over on the Dogs BF board that we are showing interest in Rory Lobb and he may become part of the Coffield trade. A lot on their board also want to target Billings, suggesting he has the game to compliment their forward line.

Yes, from our former Coach he was disappointed to miss out on Lobb on account of a relatively minor amount of salary.

He understood Lobb would be at St Kilda.

It would therefore be ironic if we now got him for the loss of Coffield.

Mind you, I would be disappointed to lose Coffield as I was to lose Acres, sent to WA because it was thought it would be beneficial for him to return home. And now he plays for Carlton!!

Lobb is no star, but is a big tall ruck/ forward who is at senior level and can walk into a side. If we lose Marshall to injury in 2024, then we're stuffed. RL has probably indicated to Coff that he may not be an automatic selection.

AFL version of cannibalism.
We eat up Freo and Carlton players because of links to coaches and officials (although we sent back Blacres as under done).
Dogs eat up Saints players because of Bains/Beverage/2020 final.
Essendon are starving because they are poor hunters, so they gather remainders.
Melbourne eats its own.

No thank you to Lobb.

I’d rather have a decent crack at a younger player, someone like Henry Smith at the Lions.

Though contracted I think he’s ready to break through in the next two years as a forward/ ruck.
Has finally finished growing, is filling out and is starting to hold marks and be more competent in the ruck and use his size.

I remember being very keen to grab Peter Wright when he was leaving the Suns. He was working out at the gym I go to when on the GC and was very open about his situation.

Chatting he said he hadn’t been physical enough and was committed to turning that part of his game around and not wasting his career.

He went to Essendon and has become a different player to the Suns version of 2mt Peter.

Don’t see any upside in Lobb.

Lobb finished off the season pretty handily.
His last 4 games netted 10 goals 6 behinds and he pinch hit in the ruck to give Tim English a chop out.
Not bad if you can have a forward/ruck averaging 2.5 goals/game.
His last season at Freo was even better or at least more consistent. He kicked 36.24 from 21 games Fair to say they missed his input this season.
The downside is that he'll be 31 at the start of the 2024 season.

I've always liked Lobb -- since he took that extraordinarily courageous mark against us several years ago. (as a Giant)

The Bulldogs pick trade with Gold Coast means they now have picks 5, 39, 47, 52, 68 & 74.

Is pick 39 enough for Coffield, and as a result, for Henry?

I think the Dogs will need to give a little more, especially given the compensation clubs are receiving for restricted free agents.

Interestingly, James Harmes has just requested a trade to the Bulldogs.
Does that put Coffield's request at risk?

28 yr old with three games in 2023. Coff has more upside?

Lobb has a chronic ankle problem and puts in some pretty soft efforts. He's also at the end of his career. I'd be really disappointed if we took him on.
