Jay Clark's likes and dislikes ..Round 23

Post: # 2026885Post saynta »

From the hun.

"4. Back to his best

Brad Hill fell out of love with the game last year.

There was lots of talk about the size of his contract, he was struggling on field and there was some potential trade interest.

In round 18 and Round 22 he had 11 possessions.

But fast forward 12 months and he is one of many Ross Lyon success stories as the Saints secured a finals berth in his first year in charge as coach.

Back on the wing, Hill is back to his hard-running best, gathering 31 disposals in the win over the Cats despite a sore knee.

Hill looked like his career might be winding up last year but he is a weapon on the wing again as the Saints look to win a final.

Rowan Marshall is another player having a brilliant season, after another 24 touches and 28 hit-outs. Leigh Montagna on Sunday said he should be in the All-Australian mix.

He is not a towering ruckman, but rather more of a dangerous floating tall.

Brad Crouch has been outstanding, Jack Sinclair is getting away with murder off the back of the stoppage, and Jack Steele kept Patrick Dangerfield to 13 possessions on Saturday night.

Some said the Saints have gone backwards this year. It is not the case.

Brad Hill ran himself to exhaustion on Saturday night.

IMO Brad was taking the piss in the last couple of years. He was not running fit like he is now.

Power running is his one wood, and when he didn’t have it, he was ordinary.

As much as you despise RTB, you’d have to agree Brad wouldn’t dare show up to preseason under Ross in the condition he did for Ratten.

Hill Is back to his A grade status under the current regime.

Do I despise RTB? Not at the moment, I don't.

glad you believe that hill is A grade though.

Along with Sinclair and Marshall. Crouch is at least B+ too.

Those 4 are why we are winning games.

He was actually fat

This year in Pre Seasn he was flying- he won every run

If he’s not fit he’s average- power running is his weapon

He’s always been an elite player if used correctly: that is, in a position in which he is not accountable. He’s unusual in that he can rarely take a contested mark and only lays the occasional tackle (although he does get the occasional good one). On the other hand, he is second to none at getting the ball out of tight situations.

He’s being used really well this year.

Is he playing on a wing or is he a high half forward?

Will never know why he was played out of position by Ratten.

I noticed after a few goals that he was lining up with the forwards. Once the ball is bounced he just runs everywhere, so can’t really say he’s a forward. Probably playing as a wing but starting forward of the centre.

Who said he fell out of love with the game last year? Is that a quote or are they putting words in his mouth?

From this article:

https://nit.com.au/13-04-2023/5580/ive- ... coach-lyon

""I probably struggled a bit the last couple of years.

"Having Ross back, I sort of got the love for the game again."

What a turnaround its been for him, was only saying to a mate Saturday night at the ground "last year (pointing to the members wing), they threw abuse at him, now they're throwing flowers at him"

You are missing Mason Wood to that list as well.
