Is it time to retire Spud's Game?

Post: # 2017783Post Waltzing St Kilda »

Now that the Danny Frawley Centre is up and running there's surely no need for Male Depression Round. It's a downer.

In 2021 we'd one the first round when we played it and lost. The first half of our season was a disaster.

In 2022 we were 8-4 when we played it and lost badly to Essendon. The second half of our season was a disaster.

In 2023 we were 8-4 again when we played it and lost. And now ...

Sure, there's no definitive correlation but I reckon ithe game has run its course anyway.

And you know what? I reckon Spud would agree with me.

"It's more than a game" comes to mind on this one.

Membership of the DFC ought to be a free part of our saints membership package.
Watching tonight's game made me want to take a drive and do a danny .
Highlighting health issues benefits some but not others .
Danny loved having fun , before the match there should be something that fills everyone with joy and laughter.
Perhaps then as I've said before the team wouldn't honour Spuds memory by playing like spuds.

This is the part I agree with the most.

+1

The only thing I’ll add is that IF they do continue with ‘Spuds Game’ we do now have a bunch of leaders that have been involved for 4 years. They should have at least gotten used to the lead up. They can’t use the Spuds Game pre-game ceremonies as an excuse any more

It’s just another game of footy when the ball is bounced

Why do we look for any excuse (other than playing poorly)

Can’t win interstate
Can’t win in TAS
Can’t win overseas
Can’t win marquee games
Can’t win Spuds game
Can’t win away from Marvel
Can’t win if we train in Seaford
Can’t win because of the coach
Can’t win in Qld
Can’t win Good Friday

Why not? That the issue, not the game itself!

Opposition teams win those games, other teams win in various scenarios

We give the players an ‘out’ by looking for excuses!

If we got awarded ANZAC day and lost - we’d blame it on the occasion and ask not to have it anymore because we can’t win due to the build up
What about the GF?
That’s got a sense of occasion?! Maybe steer clear of that game too?!

Separate the footy from the occasion. Make the whole thing light hearted with a twist.

Mental health is a very heavy topic if handled with a straight bat.

I try not to speak for others, but I reckon Spud would be livid if he knew the seriousness in how we handle Spud's game.

Spud knew how to enjoy himself and bring others into his joy, and that's one aspect of mental health a lot of people forget. Focus on the good, but don't ignore the looming darkness. It's a tough tightrope to walk.

Dont show up to pay tribute - EVER -

As above we are a disgrace.

Interstate game - Party time . Hit the beers boys

Marquee game - bring out the iron make sure we are flatter than my ball that went under the bus

Tribute game. - dump the emotions time to cry and hide.
