He’s been a good player

150 games
20ppg as a half forward
30 odd Brownlow votes

His 2017 & 2019 seasons were excellent

Like many, injuries have been a factor

But to suggest he’s been poor is poorly imo is ordinary

He’s only 27 and has been more than handy - maybe the club hasn’t developed him well????
Excuses excuses geezus Marty you’d never let anyone go
Just tell us how we are going to improve the list so our master coach can ply his trade
How are we going to get better Marty ???? Let’s have that wonderous footy knowledge provide a solution…just once …no question silly 1 line cliches ….outline your plan to take us to top 4
Master coach .???......Bahahahaha.

As B M posted "Then in a poor attempt to rebuild Freo was sacked after 4 awful seasons "

Master coaches don't usually end up getting the arse, imhfo.

Pretty simple

Keep adding to the list using the mechanisms available

Delist players not up to it
Trade in targeted players
Use draft - especially first rounders effectively
Acquire free agents

Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water but continue to evolve the list.

If I was a betting man, I would wager quite a bit that Gresh and Billings won’t be in St.Kilda colours next year. And tbh, I’m not all that worried about losing them. I mean let’s be honest, neither of the two has exactly set the AFL world on fire in the last three years.
Can we throw Jones in to make it a trifecta.

Jones will surely retire at year end. What is his contract status?

According to this table he is out of contract at year's end.

Jones could be a starting mid for us for the next 2 years, if fit.

However, his body suggests the investment is not worthwhile.

Not a chance! I can’t see any reason why the club would hold on to him. Apart from being constantly injured, he has done precious little since 2020 to show any real worth. Unless he accepts a new contact with a significant pay cut.

His plagued with injuries. If we let him go, no other club is picking him up.

I’d rather delist - like we did with Ball - cause that was a good move?!

One way you don’t get better

Is turn your first round picks into low picks after development
Gresham, Billings, Clark
A model that sure is s*** ain’t going to work

I think if you think Lyon is going to rebuild- you’ve got rocks in your head

He took over StK when they were cherry ripe in 2007 and the same with Freo in 2012
Then in a poor attempt to rebuild Freo was sacked after 4 awful seasons
You STILL haven’t told me how we are going to develop a top 4 side
Who goes Martin ????
How you going to do it?
Don’t give boorish platitudes
Show us your football mettle man …what ideas you got?

Some blokes only want to play their best, at the top level. They work harder to get there and some of them become injury prone. They usually don't care about being an Association legend.

Sainternist wrote: Tue 30 May 2023 1:03am I can’t think of how Jack Billings will remain a Saint at the end of the season. He has now had about half a dozen games at Sandy and simply can’t break back into the St.Kilda team. There’s no room for him in the forward line now. Can we fit him on the wing? Probably not, that’s covered by Mason and Hilly.

Tbh, I’ve never cared much for Billings. He promised so much, but has delivered precious little. I don’t like that perpetual milquetoast expression on his face, either. I’ll be happy to see the back of him. Apparently Cowtown and Wet Toast might be into acquiring him.

Thoughts?

RTB doing old habits, not rewarding those in form and just playing his stock 22 players.

Billings should be ahead of both Gresham and Brynes

I don't even know what Gresham position is? He's not really a midfielder, and as a small forward you'd probably have Butler/Higgins there. Has X-Factor when he wants it, but this year has been quiet, not a best kick. Hate saying it, but has time to prove me wrong I guess.

All I know is our midfield has been poor, steele should also not be playing based on form and crouch needs to defend.

Hawthorn won because of their midfield youth and getting to the ball first.

IMO, Billings, based on reputation, is a forward. Gresham has been our most effective mid over the last month, as the only mid improving his output from the first 7 weeks. Billing cant do in the centre square what Gresham can.
Billings can't play the role Byrnes is, he spent most of the summer recovering, now he is playing, not getting fitter and running further, he will need to push Higgins, Butler or Gresh out and based on his reserves efforts, probably not.
Those blokes had preseasons and contributed to a 7-4, 5th place position.
Billings hasn't been sacked, he has a contract and an opportunity to reach his peak at Sandy and leave no stone unturned.

The only problem I see in trading Gresham is that we will not get a pick that worth him its better to keep him then get a late pick at least we know what we get with him .As for jones Offer a 1 or 2 year contract if he doesn't come up we cut or trade him.
Butler is a must stay as we don't really have a replacement we don't just get rid of players unless we have replacements it will put back our list other wise.

Phillipou

Besides being a young gun - and will eventually be a star - is not having a huge impact atm

Needs a few games as an Inside Mid in the twos and then finish the game ear off in the seniors playing some mid minutes

He’s been pigeonholed as a HF

He is being pigeon-holed is a bit dramatic, he has played 11 games. Give us a break.

I do NOT recall him playing anywhere else?!

Year of exploration - he’s played HF - toughest position on the ground
