Nick Walsh Quits

Post: # 2006235Post Teflon »

SEN Article:

St Kilda Football Club has been rocked by the sudden resignation of fitness boss Nick Walsh, effective immediately.

Walsh, whose official title was Head of High Performance and Conditioning, quit on Monday. It’s unclear who will take on his responsibilities this week.

Players, many of whom liked and respected Walsh, were informed on Monday night via group message.

The Irish-born fitness guru replaced Matt Hornsby in September 2021 following the departure of Matt Hornsby.

Walsh had been an assistant coach at GWS and spent three years on Melbourne’s rookie list without playing a senior game.

More recently, Walsh led the AFL Coaches’ Association’s ‘Tackle your Feelings’ program.

His exit continues the recent exodus of off-field staff at Moorabbin. Football boss Geoff Walsh quit for family reasons in late January.

The man who replaced him, David Rath, resigned to join Rugby Australia in mid-March.

Dave Misson stepped up to lead the football department alongside Ross Lyon, with whom Walsh had recently often not seen eye to eye.

St Kilda has enjoyed an outstanding start to the season despite a lengthy injury list. The Saints were 5-1 before a close loss to Port Adelaide on Friday night.

Walsh declined to comment when contacted by SEN.com.au on Monday night.

I rank our injury management this year as "pretty good".

Any deficiencies were found out preseason with recovery time partially in preseason itself.

No significant injuries mid game.

All players who have come back and played AFL, have remained fit.

Of course there is a separate spin which includes secondary injuries to McKenzie, King, Hayes, and the extension of Members "round 1" return to round 6.

Overall we are in a much better spot than most clubs on the injury front, having come from the worst position in recent club history.

The re-occurring injuries had to come under the spot light at some stage. I guess Walsh has been identified as the weak link. Misson & RTB have acted and I would imagine they have a replacement in play.

Misson will eventually replace Walsh and a new GM will be appointed.

If we lose to North Melbourne, is the honeymoon over for Ross and the swing voters (the undecided Saints fans)

No doubt Ross will still be loved by his devotees. It's when the fanboys jump ship that he'll have anything to worry about

Time for Gill to be the next GM😀
But yeah mission will fill Walsh’s role

The Coffield management has been second rate
I remember Ross cooked Carlton on footy classified once regarding their approach to managing Curnows Knee.

No doubt there has been some issues with how players health has been managed this year and even last

Interesting

Spin it Teflon

Was it his fault that we are banged up in r6??

Or is that the coaches responsibility as coaches are responsible for injuries

You tell all of us Marty
You told me that coaches have zero to do with injuries
Have a close read of that article….think Ross is a little different…

Coach has absolutely no influence on injury in a game of AFL footy

Fitness guy has some impact - not much

Most injuries are caused by pushing one’s body beyond its limits, or collisions

The only responsibility is when over or under training is at play

Walsh quit - he wasn’t sacked

Wonder why?!

Cause he’s being held accountable for soft tissues and recurring soft tissue. From Stav BF (suspect he’s a little closer than you ..even though that grates you..)

Stav BF

Being held accountable

Coff had a hamstring that needed surgery just before Xmas.

Pretty sure this is his second calf - which he reinjured recovering from the first.

King Hammy just kicking a footy is alarming considering it was in kick to kick with BJ and not match sim

Ross had a calf over Xmas/new year.

Dmac has had a couple in the off-season and might be done for the year at this rate.

So from that list alone you have 2 blokes reinjuring themselves with the same injuries.

There was more over Xmas/new years too.

Jones had a calf and now achilles.

Campbell Achilles in the new year.

Ross doesn’t **** around

By the way

The senior coach is not responsible for making footy dept appointments either

That would be the footy manager and CEO
Coaches view may have been sought or maybe he was on a panel

But it’s not like
“I’m Ross Lyon, appoint these people”
It’s not 3rd division SFL

People have roles in footy clubs

A senior coach doesn’t do everything or is responsible for everything- good or bad

Footy Manager - manage the footy dept - not the coach
List managers- manage the list - not recruit
Recruiters - recruit players
High performance- are responsible for fitness
Assistant coaches - are responsible there respective lines
Other depts
Include Medical inc physios, Psychs, dietitians

Senior coach - manages overall strategy and his assistants

Jumping off what exactly? I've never jumped off the team or the club.

The first 6 rounds have been fun but I haven't officially joined Fireman's fanboy club

Is Walsh getting the blame for Steele playing too early?

Can't be- Ross was bullish about Steele returning early.
When he sent Steele to Cripps, he said 'consider it part of your rehab'

I don't know what to make of it

Reading some of your posts it is almost like you are hoping Ross and the club fail in their current attempts to improve our football club.

Amazing stuff and reflects more on yourselves than anyone at the club or other posters here.

I guess some peoples idea of "club culture" is stuck in the 80's.

I am truly convinced there are those that there are supporters so engrained in a losing culture that it's become part of them.

100% spot on
You could read through this thread sand spot those who are just chomping at the bit to see us fall over just so they could say
“I told you so”
It’s a genuine loser mentality
Does that make the rest of us fanboys cause we want, above any individual players so called great record, team success finally for St Kilda FC?
No
But it won’t stop those who love wearing their
“I follow Saints….we are losers and everyone’s 2nd favourite team…but I stuck fat!” mentality on their sleeve
Odd
