Marcus Windhager

I just wanted to acknowledge Marcus' goal in the last quarter.

At his age, in that position, and at that important stage of the game, I thought it was a super effort. Really knocked Essendon for six.

Was a big moment for the kid. Didn’t have a huge night for stats but I read here somewhere that he was amongst the busiest players on the night in terms of running.

Anyone able to shed some light as to who he played on? Seems to have started in the defensive mid role.

Thought Windhager was quiet

Played in that dreadful HF role which has killed many careers

High HF = about 10 possessions and a lot of chasing arse

He should have been kicking from the goal line. We had two guys pinged in Round 1 for pointing at the replay.

I think he needed the run after not even having a practice match being injured in the first 5 minutes.
Maybe this week a checking role on Rowell or Miller

He gassed out early. I was watching him from level 1 and he was stuffed. Kept going though and thought he did ok since he's had a limited preparation. He'll be better for the run. Run with role this week you'd think.

Might he run with Rowell, who is so powerful for them inside ? I think Marcus is strong enough and disciplined enough, but it would be a big ask .

Gassed early. Sure.
Ran 16.3 km.
I need his gas!

He ran with Merret most of the night.
The Essendon skipper had 25 disposals at 68% efficiency, with 9 contested possessions, and 2 score involvements.
Given that he normally has at least 10 more disposals than that at a much higher effeciency, I'd say Windy did his job.

Exactly, he curbed Merret's influence , then kicked the game breaker himself. Good hit out

I’m hoping there are more strings to his bow than being predominantly a tagger. I think there are, but time will tell.

The big test for Marcus is the season before him.

The dreaded 2nd year blues looms large.

It's mainly a category attached to players who show a lot of promise in their first season and then struggle in their second year with the added attention due to opposition clubs collecting intel to curtail the emerging strengths.

It's going to be an interesting sub plot to watch and he'll know with the current injury crisis he'll potentially be getting the oppositions better players defend him until we start getting players back.

Here's hoping he can emulate the career of say Joel Selwood and just continue to improve and dominate year on year from debut...those types are rare breeds though but we can dream.
