Jack Peris - could play this year

Post: # 1998470Post Otiman »

Peris has come from the clouds (not quite like Caminiti) to be named emergency this week. Ross mentioned him in his press conference, and has talked about him before.

Noted as a pressure small forward.

From those that have seen him play, who could he replace in the 22? Has he made big strides since last year?

It appears so.

If he's a 'pressure small fwd'
Then based on Butler beimg subbed out...

Only recently turned 19. So similar age to a lot of 1st year drafteees. So this year remains development but it seems he is doing that: developing.
Would be very very interesting to see him out there putting pressure on. His pace is another level to anyone in the AFL system.

He really needs to tidy up his skills both by hands & feet before he would be a realistic option going forward. He has ridiculous speed and is very courageous for a lad his size.

when the cupboard is barer than bare you still need to pick emergencies so when some of the players currently on the injured list become available expect Peris to slip back down below emergency level, sounds like though he might still sneak in for a debut later in the year possibly.

The injury list is what it is, the available players sparse on the ground

But that said, there were within the Club wraps on this kid last year

He is an excitement machine and is taking the steps

There is every chance he will debut at AFL level this season including when more players are available

As an exercise and noting the injuries we had across the second half of 2022 and the current injury list, who were in our 22 for Round 1 and also in our 22 from the last game last season?

I am guessing maybe half the injury depleted side from 2022 were on the park last weekend

And that is before we get to a full strength side from 2022 and a full strength side for 2023

Does he have endurance as well as speed? You get the impression RTB is wanting a lot of that especially while the injuty list is so long. Run the opp off their feet -- it's about all we've got right now.

He’s honestly a fair way off, only in the conversation due to an extensive injury list.
Being quick & a good tackler simply isn’t enough at the elite level.

Maybe we could re sign Dean Kent, give Butler another ,'walk in' year to come good after being found out or we could jab up Mackenzie and Jones.

No I very much doubt it is! There is no question he is a little battler, but you have got to be able to finish off your work when you win the footy
and at this stage he cant. Can he improve his skills definitely, but he needs to do it this season or he might miss the boat.

IF Josiah Kyle had of stuck with the AFL he had the makings of a very natural goal kicking small forward - but alas it wasnt to be.

He is a mile off

He plays, we are scraping

He’d be 44 out of 46 on the list

Jack played his only season of senior football last year.

At the moment he is 30 out of 32 in a Ross Lyon led program and Ross like his elite ability to learn and train to a plan.

At 10, he trialled for the his first national championship and finished last, at 15 he was the 400m National Champion under 16.
His focus never lifted from running. He is an elite runner.
He is an elite 400m runner @ 179cm and 79kgs. Running half backs might need to pay attention.
2 years later, while boarding at Melb Grammar, he gave up on preparation for under the 19's Nationals, which were postponed and he then made the Sandringham Dragons, after less than 50 official junior games and played on all three lines and while maintaining blistering pace, he developed a reputation for pressure and tackling and worked tirelessly on his skills, which is difficult at that pace.

Last year he played his first ever game of senior football, at VFL level, and finished top 10 in the Best & Fairest.

In his last 6 games, he was running off half back, roving and played wing and went forward as a small pressure forward and managed 4.3.

A mile is only 1600m, you won't see him coming until the last 400m, which he runs in about 48 seconds.

There seems to be a huge range of opinions, from those that are a year old, to some good insights to his trajectory. I'll be keeping an eye on him in the VFL and training reports.

Maybe 36th. 7 others playing for Sandi tomorrow, including Cooper whilst Peris is still one of three emergencies for the seniors.

A lot of draftees play their fist year of Senior footy in the AFL

Peris can run - short distances

Can he
1) get a kick
2) get it to a team mate if he does

Well if peris is a mile off, caminiti was 1000 miles off in January, given he wasn’t training with an afl club or on a list…

So you never know….

I'd like to see less project players, actually I'd like to see no project players. I think it hurts a clubs depth.

You want us to recruit Jones, Hannerbery and Kent?

Or Marshall Sinclair and Wilkie?

I'm not sure about project players, I think we probably align on those three you mention so not relevant to the point I was making.

Have we ever had a successful project player ?

A player who has some transportable skills from another code or came from athletics or a mature age player.

Project players are attractive as they are only offered the basics AFL employment contract which I think was around the 80k mark although that's probably bit higher now. A project player might also attract government grant money in some cases.

Highly speculative.
