Training- Monday February 20

Post: # 1995096Post Saintmike65 »

A pleasant temperature respite today for the players after a torturous 3 1/2 hour sauna session on Friday.
Heavy emphasis on ball retention inside forward 50, with high defensive pressure obvious.
The heavy training loads have finished so even more emphasis will be on structure and precise ball movement.
Coffield not wearing fluro cap anymore which is good news.
Phillipou, Owens, Windhager & Nas will be super important to our fortunes this season!

How did the Talls perform with ball retention in F50, is Sharmans biggest weakness once the ball hits the deck and will hold him back, what about Anthony? He looks a little better at competing for the ball on the ground?

Great stuff once again Mike. I envy you being able to slip down to training so regularly - the players, coaches and staff must know you as a regular by now?

Yeah it helps when you’re regular…even had the club president share our bbq recently.
There’s a group of us seniors regularly go to training, call ourselves the brains trust!

The talls were Caminiti, Sharman, Owens and Phillipou…they were good at bringing the ball to ground…Caminiti and Owens really attack the ball strongly in the air, both very courageous.
Marshall was drifting forward & took a couple of beautiful one grab marks under pressure.
Noticed several players very adept at the J kick from the boundary, Owens very good and Phillipou nailed one on his non preferred right!, in fact goal kicking is a big focus this entire pre season.

But Mike you mentioned there was a heavy emphasis on ball retention inside F50 and my question was how did the talls perform in that regard? Any meat on the bone on how the talls performed after the ball hit the deck.

The talls quickly went off the grounds, change numbers and were shrunk a bit and turned into crumbers, then after they crumbed their own aerial contest, then they quickly ran back to the boundary to be restored to full height.

Sharman was outstanding at this.

Oh WOW!, so it is true, Lyon does have a magic wand. I just thought it was a fanboy thing. Our forward line will be unstoppable.

I hope a lot of work is put into creating goal-kicking opportunities by whatever means. We were down near the bottom in scoring last season.

We’ve been forced to go with a smaller, mobile set up, with a big emphasis on chasing, harrasing & tackling to cause turnovers &
re entries.
Marshall will be important when he has a spell forward!
Caminiti and Sharman will be given every chance over the next 2 weeks, they both were good today with their airial work, both also stay in contests at ground level.
It will be interesting to see how the boss sets up on Friday against Melbourne…I’ll be there so I’ll do a report on the game.

Thanks Mike, yeah will be keen to hear how those two go, especially their ground contests, defensive work and second efforts, the ball came out of our F50 too easy last year and obviously Sharman needed to build his fitness and get better without ball in hand.

There is a very good reason I am doing that, St. Byron has stated openly that he is moderating based on personality and not the rules, I have reported many posts that have clearly breached the board rules but there was no action by St.Byron. So I figure if I identify openly the posts I report then there is some transparency on how St. Byron is moderating.

St. Byron should be moderating to the rules consistently and without bias or an agenda.

I think St. Byron is doing a good job at moderating. It’s a thankless task and perhaps we should all reflect upon what we say on this forum.

Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.
