Hayes may not be ready for round one. He did his knee in round 6 last year so it's unlikely the fitness team would risk him earlier than that in 2023.

For the first half a dozen rounds I'd got with Battle, Sharman, and Membrey as our three marking forwards.

Gold Coast lost Ben King for the season last year and they managed reasonably well. It's a challenge for us but it does give us the chance to get a really good look at other players in Max King's role.
Battle doesn't cut it as a forward.

big fan of Sharman but now as our main tall focus in the forward line he will get the better big defender

No, it was a prick called Kelly in the NT who pointed the bone at us 'cause we wouldn't release Cuz to play in an indigenous side in an exhibition game.

Absolutely.
Should never have retired.
Didn't want to as late as July.

Now then.

Would Ross-the-boss have the nerve to ask your-Holiness, Mr. Douglas Dc-10 Howard-Hughes to grace the forward line?

If wasn’t so tragic you’d laugh

I’ve had a shoulder reco, knee and ankle. None are remotely back to what they were and never will be. But the shoulder is shot, cannot bowl fully or throw a cricket ball whatsoever anymore - I got a full reco in 2017 - by the same shoulder specialist orthopaedic surgeon in Mt Eliza that does AFL players. Did 6 months rehab, couldn’t do any weight training, mainly hydrotherapy. And basically lost all upper body strength!
Never played a game of footy since and it has had a huge effect on cricket!
It’s a serious injury/rehab unlikely to see him next season

So
Marking contests in early December hmm 🤔

I know it’s bad luck, but is it necessary?

Pre Season priority 1
Getting the team fit and health for the season
In our last 5 pre seasons we’ve had serious injuries to key players!

It’s killing us… I was bullish… now I’m despondent

And replacing him with Cooper Sharman… pfft
I think Full backs across the league just let out a Huge sigh of relief!

NRL also has a Max King.
He played for Gold Coast Titans then Cantebury (or something)
By age 22 hed had had 4 shoulder reconstructions.

Our Max was certainly crashing the packs this year. He reminded me of Paddy McCartin and Kosi.

He's a good player and will be missed, but the question is, How many games has he been the difference between us winning and losing?

However you were not a 21 year old professional athlete when you did that injury Marto, so i dont think it is a doom and gloom and the season is done for him. Max has already recovered from a knee reco in his career, so clearly knows the rehab required for a serious injury. Also have faith in Dave Misson to oversee the recovery program.

On marking contests in december, given we don't know the context it is a bit early to judge, could be just as likely to trip on a teammates foot on a running track doing the 3k time trial and break a leg, ankle or land on your shoulder and break/pop it.

The one player we don't have a ready replacement for. We will have to go mobile and play Sharman, Membrey and a ruck/forward (Hayes etc) and rely more on ball delivery more than we have in the past few years. That in itself might be the only small positive out of losig a dominant full forward.

The team will have to learn not to just bang it forward on top of the full forward.

The only good thing to come from scenarios like this is it gives you options to try stuff that you otherwise pbly wouldn’t have bothered with.

Coops has pbly found himself right in contention for a rd1 start

Membrey pbly stays forward instead of pushing up the ground…

Battle may go forward and give Cordy an opportunity down back

Or we might stay smaller and play a guy like Mason Wood as a lead in option to a 3 prong, medium forwards attack

One thing is for sure… the option of being pointlessly King centric, which has been an issue, has been forcibly removed from the equation

Not a good thing but hopefully we can find a positive out of it

It’s not the end of the world..if we’re going to be any good we have to have contingency plans.
We lost Rooey for 4 months in 2010 & made a grand final!
It creates an opportunity for someone, we will have to share the load for a change.

Could you imagine the response, if someone at the club announced, we are not doing any marking contests until Jan. Like, seriously?

Max King is just another footballer who will be injured this preseason, its a random accident, nothing to do with luck. Luck is good, not bad.

If we had not recruited some KPP and still had Joyce we are gone but not so bad now.
We have options I here that Van Es is ready to go at 197cm 99kg is a KPB play him with Dougal at CHB and move battle to forward.
Cordy to CHF and battle FF with either heath or Marshall/Campbell as rucks.
There are other combinations with maybe Oscar Adams as a forward/Ruck with Sharman FF and cordy as a CHF as long as we have experience around these guys they should be ok.
Or we look to play Marshall as a Permeant forward until King is back and ruck with Campbell and either Adams or Heath as back up in the forward pocket.
Maybe play Van Es as a key forward with his pace and vertical he could be a real asset and play cordy at CHB

Your rehab must have been average tbh. My daughter had a knee reconstruction and she’s stronger than ever. A girl I coached had a shoulder reconstruction and she came back without missing a beat.

Age plays a big role as does physical fitness. I don’t know your age or fitness, but I’m tipping king is younger and physically fitter than your good self

Id imagine Max would have had a tailored weights program over the off season, but sometimes young guys can work too much on certain muscle groups eg chest and destabilise their shoulders. Basically adding strength that is not balanced with their back & shoulders etc. You would hope Max hasnt done that?

Not that he is a garaunteed starter but you would think Josh Eyre being added to list is looking more likely now!

As they say timing is everything, so there is some silver lining to Max being hurt this far out. Lenny and co may need to tweak their game plan and it does give the coaches the chance to trial a variety of options before the season starts.

Cordy has played up forward with modest success. Don't know if Van Es has played in the forward line at all but if the coaches can manage rotations Van Es may be part of the answer.

One of the things I noticed with Max this pre season was that he seemed to have the confidence and size to throw his weight around. He was really cracking in.

I guess if you can draw a positive it is better to happen on December 5 than round 1
It also gives an opportunity to see if someone will step up - chance for Sharman who I remember filled in very well against Freo when King was out in 2021
