Naming a guy who played 50 games as one of the best ever saints!
Yep, came to the Saints as a 26 year old from memory.
Was at his peak when he arrived and his peak was exceptional in my opinion.

Was a star in WA, AA, second & third I think in the Brownlow in his time at the Saints, starred in Interstate games for WA, just a real shame he got injured.

But we are talking career impact yeah?

Not just level of ability at a point in time???

His career was at a very high level, albeit brief.

It was a shame
1) he didn’t come earlier
2) he got injured

Ditto
Brian Gleeson

Was named at one stage, along with Barry Robran as one of the three best footballers in Australia. Highly skilled.

Gleeson won a brownlow in 1957 and never played again.

22 years of age and just appointed captain in 1958 before getting injured in a practice game.

Just another saga in the saints tragic history

I massively agree

McIntosh was a great player! (Pity we didn’t look at his son?!)

But not convinced his career stacks up against a Nathan Burke for instance

I think people on here remember the 2004-2008 Harvey and it’s clouded their memory. He was extremely good in that time but probably on the fringe of the top ten. And even in his decline, he single-handedly won a final in Adelaide.

People forget how magnificent he was in 2003 after repeat knee injuries. Nearly won the Brownlow.

Throughout the 1990s, he was an absolute weapon and he won countless games off his own boot - by consistently delivering the ball perfectly into the F50.

I think he’s extremely underrated, including by his own fans, who often forget the first 300 of the 375 were sublime.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Agree Everton

R.Harvey in 97-98 was out of this world good. He was dominating games week in week out, I think he racked up about 60 Brownlow votes in two years… it was incredible. Actually, between R1 1996 and mid 1999 (knee injury) he was BOG at least 20 times in 70 matches - almost 1 out of 3 games he was the best player on the Ground!!!

I think he received 3 Votes on 45 occasions!!!!

Staggering

Love to know who and what the next best Saint was??

Theyd be a fair bit behind Sir Robert

The 97 GF wasn't his best. He got 35 possessions or something and was tagged. And the tagger was considered to have done a fantastic job. That's how good he was.

Sometimes when we're talking the best of the best these discussions become moot. Like comparing Black Caviar to Pharlap. Unless you are Don Bradman and you are are simply head and shoulders above all others, it's an impossible conversation but an enjoyable one. For mine Plugger was the most talented player I have ever seen (including Ablett Snr) Just raw power combined with utter mongrel and incredible skill. He only got about 60-70% out of himself at the Saints though I reckon. He'd kick 100 goals and be 10kg's over weight. Was good enough to win 3 x Brownlows before he even left Saints. Imagine Plugger with Harvey and Riewoldt's dedication to training?

For mine, Plugger, Roo, Harve's in that order. Only because KPP is harder to play and Roo did it for so long.

Doesn’t that actually detract from Tony though

The fact he was AA 3 times at StK and only kicking 100 three times (and I say that knowing how it sounds!)

I don’t think plugger ever played a full season at his peak? Maybe 92 but he was overweight
89 and 91 were actually his most dominant years by average goals (but he only played 28 games in those two seasons.

Honestly
He could have kicked nearly 200 in a season imo if he was fully fit
But he wasn’t and he didn’t

He was a brilliant talent and it was still awesome to watch him play for the Red White and Black

He looks pretty trim these days

If that is the criteria, you have a valid point.

The days of mature recruits coming from interstate as bonafide stars and having immediate impact was very exciting.

The last two I recall were Winmar (22?) & McCadam (23?) coming across and impacting straight away.

Gilbert only played 50 off games from memory but I think his impact in those 50 was pretty significant.
