AFLW Draft

Post: # 1964289Post B.M »

Good to see we continued our proud tradition of taking roughies.

Our first pick was not even tipped to go in the first 30

The girl tipped to get picked up by us (Vic Country MVP) was taken the very next pick after ours.

I hope the girl is ok, because in a compromised draft she was out earliest selection

BTW good year to finish bottom, when 4 new teams come in and you get pick 16!

Anyway
Good luck to the girl!

Not sure why we’d reach with our first pick though?

Jed Anderson's sister who was playing with Sandringham

J'Noemi Anderson
Hard-tackling player who can play forward and also push into the midfield. Loves a contest and bursts from stoppages with power. Brother Jed plays for North Melbourne. Hails from Darwin, but plays for Sandringham when boarding at school in Melbourne.

What's the problem?

No problem

Just find it interesting that a girl not tipped to go early at all, was taken by us at 16

I haven’t seen any girls play footy, but I’m sure the people who put together mock drafts would have.

Me
I’d just go with the most credentialed player

The girl was pick 16 in the draft BUT she was pick 7 in the Victorian draft, which is where we pick from.

The AFLW draft doesn't work the same as the men's, the girls nominate which state draft they want to particpate in and the
clubs from that state pick from that pool.

I think that changes to a fully national draft, any team can pick any player, once the women's comp is fully professional.

At the moment the AFLW women play footy and have jobs or they are studying, hence the way the draft works.

Yeah I found that a little bit strange as the Mongrel draft (excerpt below) had her at 30 in their top 30 (equivalent of roughly 13th in the available Victorian pool) and we did the same last draft with Ella Friend and Ash Richards (both were tipped to go a bit later in the draft) where it's been a mixed-bag from both but they look like they'll grow into being long term players. If TLR didn't leave then I daresay we would've gone for a different type of player. I'm happy that we rewarded good form with the Southern Saints pathways by bringing in our skipper Hannah Stuart and DJ - both very solid and composed players!

30: J’Noemi Anderson – Midfielder/Forward, Northern Territory, 171cm

The best Northern Territory prospect in this year’s draft, J’Noemi Anderson is a player that was supposed to play at the Sandringham Dragons in the NAB League this year but didn’t play a single game. She did represent The Allies in the national championships this year and was very impressive.

Much like her brother Jed, who is currently playing at the North Melbourne men’s team, Anderson is an inside-first midfielder, who is very powerful around the stoppages, both with the ball and without the ball, but as her campaign in the championships indicated, she is also very capable of hitting the scoreboard when she’s around the forward half of the ground, kicking two goals in her two matches for the Allies this year, also averaging 14.5 disposals, 2.5 clearances, 2.5 inside 50s, 2.5 marks and four tackles per game.

Of course, like many inside midfielders, her kicking is very scratchy and in terms of defensive transition, it’s been said that it needs work in this area, but above all else, when the game is in the balance and the game is there to be won, Anderson will do almost anything and everything required to make sure her side is the one with the ball in possession.

Anderson is an inside-mid that CAN go forward. Hannah Stuart is a pure mid that will have an immediate impact!

"Saints land four fresh faces at AFL Women's Draft"

Now I know what is wrong with St Kilda recruitment.
They select players based on having fresh faces.
This must have been going on for the last 56 years

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.
