Of course he’s no Bontempelli… , he is equal No 1 player in the game!!!

What a stupid comparison

BTW
Billings peaked in 2018 where he finished 4th in the B&F not 2015

Gresham will most definitely be a starting mid in ‘22
"billings peaked in 2015. never reached such lofty heights again relative to his experience" his second year - was definitely top ten from that draft at the time.

now lets look at the quality of our top ten in 2015 vs 2018 in which billings actually finished ninth.
2015
1st: Jack Steven (175 votes)
2nd: David Armitage (159)
3rd: Sean Dempster (149)
4th: Leigh Montagna (143)
5th: Jarryn Geary (132)
6th: Dylan Roberton (108)
7th: Nick Riewoldt (105)
8th: Josh Bruce (92)
9th: Sam Fisher (77)
9th: Jimmy Webster (77)
4 AA players in there.

2018
1 – Jack Steven (191 votes)
2 – Seb Ross (175)
3 – Jack Steele (134)
4 – Jade Greshamn (126)
5 – Jarryn Geary (118)
6 – Jimmy Webster (109)
7 – Jake Carlisle (103)
8 – Tim Membrey (87)
9 – Jack Billings (72)
10 – Daniel McKenzie (69)
no AA players at that time.

gresham peaked in 2018 which i did say. perhaps you have them confused?

Why?
When playing, has always been the number one ‘rover’ to Ryder.
So let me get this clear....

1) he went into the midfield in 2019?
2) it was better for the team overall to have him there? (yes, he did well individually, but what about the team?)
3) Facial injury in 2020..until then did very well ...as a mid? ...as did St Kilda. St Kilda looked markedly weaker until recovering at the very end of the season.
4) 2021 Round three: achilies...

Now what does 4) really mean?

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/1 ... 7120966041

Our study found that 72.3% of NBA players returned to play after Achilles tendon repair, but they had shorter careers compared with uninjured controls. Players returning from Achilles tendon repairs had decreased game utilization and performance at all time points relative to their individual preindex baseline. However, for the injured players when compared with controls, game utilization but not performance was found to be decreased at 3-year follow-up.

My guess..
Gresh will be a forward sneak again...if he wants a long career...and he might spend some game as a mid.
Thanks for that information about Archilles injuries and basketball players. I suspect it has no relevance for football which is played on a completely different surface.
My guess: Gresham will play mid when fit again.
Yeah..
Well here is an Amercian Football thing…
https://www.downtownrams.com/single-pos ... lles-tear/

It is really is bleak..

I think Gresh is a star ..hope he has a long career..

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

550 disposals from 22 games
13 goals
11 Brownlow votes

Pretty good numbers for a Wing/HF

Hopefully a similar salary cut will happen to "he who won't be dropped".
Salary and output relativities between he and Billings are now all over the place!

Thats a huge year for all players but even better with someone that kicks the ball as well as Billings does.

Teffers is 100% spot on. Not one neutral supporter would have him in a retrospective top 10. Classical st kilda that we rate him as having done something special. 2 x top 5 finishes in a B&F at a lowly ranked club in 9 years. Yep. Top shelf player.

Good solid player who disappoints with his kicking and goes missing in big games

Top 10... interesting exercise. Let’s see, players I’d select ahead of Billings. In no particular order and obviously not like for like

Steele
Sinclair
Marshall
Ryder
Membrey
Crouch
Clark
Wilkie
King
Hill
Webster
Jones
Ross

Then I’d have Billings in this group alongside Gresh, Highmore, Higgins, Paton, Coffield.

I think the argument stands

Billings is better than Darcy Byrne Jones Mat Crouch James Cicily and you could argue Salem who has been good this season as a seagul.

No. He’s not Curly. Darcy BJ may not have his skills and his most recent season may not have been his best, but his career to date has been far more consistent.
Sicily is a no brainer. Very important player to Hawks and they need him injury free.
Crouch has achieved more in his career than Billings, despite his injuries

DBJ was and should have been dropped last season. He had one good year. Crouch was good when Adelaide were flying now he is just ok and Cicily while being great at times is more often a hinderence.

Billings is marked so hard due to his draft position. Watch how often when he gets the ball we get a score. His footskills mean he is targeted by opponents as they know his hurt factor.

Thats a huge year for all players but even better with someone that kicks the ball as well as Billings does.
But he doesn't kick the ball that well! It's a complete furphy. I don't know the stats but my eyes tell me that if you compare him with elite mids, such as Zac Merrett, Gary Ablett Jnr, Bontempelli, his field kicking doesn't stack up. It was this quality of kicking we were promised. Compare his goal kicking to say (from previous eras) Shannon Grant or Nathan Brown (who we were promised he was going to be of similar ilk) and his goal kicking throughout his career has been poor. Misses way too many easy shots and snaps for a player whose main attribute is his kicking.

Take into account his performances in big games which is where the best players earn their keep (his finals last year were poor) and I would say that he has been a huge disappointment. Yes, his draft selection plays a role, and why shouldn't it? It's commensurate with the investment the club has made with him. If he was taken in the mid 30's then his draft selection would be considered a win, but in the top 3 of a draft?? Sorry, it's a disappointment any way you look at it.

DBJ had a poor year by his standards - probably about the same standard as Billings in the last 2 years. And there has been plenty of calls for Billings to be dropped. When Billings was missing with injury, the team didn't miss a beat, in fact when Long went down there it could be almost argued that Long's mongrel and desire to keep the ball in his area was an improvement for the team.

If, as you say, that Billings is a HF/Wing only then the club is clueless. Imagine wasting a pick 3 on a small fwd,/wing type. Unless they are going to develop into a Nathan Brown type. Phil Matera, the Wiz from Dees were consistent match winners. Billings is not

Matera and Farmer were small forwards

Different position

Brown is a better comparison

HF is probably the hardest position to play in AFL footy, it’s selfless and opportunistic and very few are great
Robbie Gray being the best

Would you be upset if we Drafted Gray at Pick 3 who is predominately a HF

You draft good players - position is irrelevant

Name another HFF who got 550 possessions, kicked 13 goals and received 11 Brownlow votes in 2019?!

Lol. For starters you’re cherry picking one season from 9. In that season he kicked 13 goals even though he played mainly fwd. Brownlow votes?? I guess we should have kept Dunstan if we’re basing value to the team off what 3 umpires reckon?

I agree with your last statement. However, at 180cm I would have thought that Billings could run through the midfield or kick more than 13 goals.

Averaging 25 possessions a game is a good effort. But if it was a great effort then I reckon he’d have been looking at a top 2 finish in our B&F . His kicking is not as good as many are making out. A great season would see him kicking 25 goals from HF. Jack Steele kicked roughly 13 goals this season.

Also my annoyance with Billings is his consistency. If he’d had 3 seasons in a row from 2019 I’d shut up. He hasn’t

Re Robbie Gray. A deadset champ who has exquisite skills, is great inside and is a dead eye dick. Also lightening quick and strong. Billings has very few of those qualities
