Saintsational v St Kilda (Best and Fairest)

Post: # 1926702Post kosifantutti »

With huge thanks to Sainter Dad for the Saintsational info and also showing me how to put a table together, here are the comparisons of the top 10 for the Trevor Barker award against the Eastern Memorial award from 2013 to 2021

This is a chance to see how much the club have over or under rated players over the last 9 years. If nothing else, it's one place you can go and find all our best and fairest finishes for the last 9 years without doing 9 separate Google searches.

The club usually only publishes a top 10 so if they have a player that we didn't put in the top 10, I have put in brackets where they finished at Saintsational. But I can't do it the other way eg I can't say where Hayes and McEvoy finished in the Trevor Barker award in 2013.

Some interesting discrepancies between those lists eg Jarryn Geary in a couple of years.

While Luke Dunstan played a series of good games this year I am surprised he finished as high as he did in the Eastern Award. If he ends up there in the TBA as well he will presumably be more aggrieved.

I am not sure how The Trevor Barker Award votes are tabulated but suspect, like most club awards, recognition is given to more than 5 players per match and maybe even in some cases all players are scored.

Therefore players like Wilkie, Webster and Sinclair who played most matches, but perhaps are not necessarily 1 to 5 rated, may accumulate votes at a lower level and feature higher than the Saintsational award. Hence players like Dunstan and Clark who played lesser games are unlikely to feature as high.

Also I feel there is a built in bias against certain players by some supporters on this site and elsewhere. It took weeks or even years for some supporters to recognise Sinclair's worth to the team. I used to be amazed at the number of undeserved negative comments about him posted here. I will be surprised if he does not significantly feature higher in the TBA than he appears in Eastern's list for this year.

Sinclair & Jones tied in the Eastern this year & Jones missed a lot of games very surprised IMO Sincs will be top 3 in the Barker & Jones lucky to be top 5 . Just shows how differently people see the game

It shows defenders hey B&F votes but not fan votes.

And the some players are underrated and some are overrated

Reviewing SS this year...
Seems a misstep that Wilkie isn’t in the top 10

Well you don't have to be Einstein to realise that this forum , wrongly I submit, has a lower opinion of our captain, than the club.

The proof is there for all to see.

A slight update to the 2018 voting. Some late votes came in for the Eagles game.

It's hard to see how McKenzie finished 10th in the TBA when he only played 13 games and wasn't a stand out in any of them. IOHO (In Our Humble Opinion)

Some whipping boys have done alright - maybe they’re not that bad

Let’s sell em off though and take our chances on second and third round draft picks!!!

Just to clarify - the votes in the Eagles Game in 2018 were counted - and were in the 2018 total votes for the Saintsational Player of the year.

When I was asked to put together the stats for the past 8 years I trolled the Forum for the votes and must have misread a title.

The implication is clear that the Votes for 2018 were not complete - it was merely the summary on THIS years thread that was updated.

I have provided a step by step guide to how I tabulate these votes if anyone else would like to take over

I hope we recruit more daylight this off season, they're obviously good players.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Second could go to Sincs, Howard or Wilkie and all would be worthy in my opinion

I think Hill might surprise and finish as high as fifth. Won’t be a surprise if he finishes as low as eighth, but I think his second half of the year was exceptional and his work ethic and leadership is an asset to the team

My top 10

Steele
Howard
Sinclair
Wilkie
Hill
Membrey
Webster
King
Crouch
Jones

Hill may well of got votes off Ratts most weeks, Brett was his biggest fan, even when Hill was struggling, big time.

It’s a live stream. I’m enjoying it and they’ve dished out a few trophies like Robert Harvey best clubman award (Sinclair), the Lenny Hayes Crest Award ( Steele) and Sebby was given St Kilda Life Membership. We’re up to Round 19 and Brad Hill is the surprise packet. He’s currently in 3rd spot.

Steele is a mile ahead and then it’s close for the placings. Sincs is second and I think there’s Howard, Crouch, Wilkie and others doing ok. Membrey is top ten if I recall, and Jimmy Webster also top ten.

This was just before counting for the last 4 rounds. A handful of votes separating 3rd down to eighth
