What can we do about our goal kicking?

Post: # 1901830Post skeptic »

No big call to suggest it cost us the game tonight.

Minus patches of last season... it’s been a problem for years.

The issues look mechanical. I’m no expert but the awful follow throughs with the stabbing motion or those that don’t go the direction you want to be kicking... or the last second veering to the left... or getting to close to the man on the mark etc
So many shots look so obviously wrong

How do we fix this?

Indeed. We would have been 10 goals up at half time with better kicking.

We would have been grinding the cats into the dirt in the 3rd quarter with better accuracy.

Just one of those weird games you see where a team seemingly dominates, but loses.

You teach it.. A guy like King hasn't ever needed to develop strong fundamentals because his size has always made him a top prospect.

Biomechanics of his set shots is horrible, his routine is inconsistent...he looks like he just has a pot shot every attempt rather than an actual technique or process.

I just don't think we have high standards at our club. There are some red flags that we're just not an elite organisation, at least by the standards of elite sport worldwide

Whatever Ben Dixon did in his time at the Saints as a goal kicking coach has counted for nothing.

We can do what I have done with my putting. Take dead aim. Set up with eyes over ball. Always, always always KICK/HIT THROUGH THE BALL.

50 shots at goal each training day from various distances and angles and don't finish till they each kick 5 in a row from 40 metres out in front.

Start with King by telling him not to twirl the ball round as he is coming into kick it ..... and maybe look like you want to kick it

Its gobsmacking no one has changed up his routine

I’m no expert but Tony Lockett always aimed for the goal umpire. If a player can put it on someones head from 50 metres away then look up find the goal umpire and pass it to him or her?
I know it’s not that simple but fair dinkum if you have ever been out on an AFL field the goals are huge! It’s amazing how they actually miss!

Forget getting people like Dixon and Lockett in to teach what came naturally to them. Get someone like Stewart Loewe in who fixed his greatest weakness.

That never works. All a player does is practise his mistakes.

Max King kicks like his brother, so there is obviously as genetic element. His bother is much more accurate so there is hope. His main mistake is to try to kick the distance rather than the direction.

Tim Membrey's error's is in his kicking style where he "lays back" on the kick to get distance. The drop is therefore skewed and he can then kick "across" the ball, usually pulling it to the left. This is not an easy thing to fix, as his balance at kicking now depends on the fault.

If goal kicking accuracy is losing us tight games, then it's an issue that needs addressing. I remember many years back talking to some Geelong FC connections who were saying how they put a lot of importance on kicking ability when recruiting, and some good prospects were overlooked due to their average skills in that area. You don't see poor kicking in Geelong teams generally. Clarkson put a lot of emphasis on kicking skills when he went to Hawthorn, and after a couple of years you could see the results. We have a few ball butchers who try hard, but just disadvantage the team when the pressure is on.

There is technology out there that will help enormously.

What works for one person wont work for another. Ultimately it is practice.
Practice and NOT kick and giggle at the end of a session.

Setting up a routine. Setting up a method. Understanding and analysing ball flight path. Knowing exactly how many steps required to kick a distance.
It is a science

Treat as a kick and giggle and this is the result.
It is the only part of the game that isn't properly analysed. Ultimately it is THE ONLY SKILL THAT MATTERS

Been saying it for 30 years. ... the team that works out that it is the only skill that ultimately matters will be undefeatable.
17.5 is a big score.

Loewe didn't fix his flaw on his own, he was coached.

If my memory serves me correctly, the Club engaged Peter Hudson to teach Stewart Loewe to kick for goal.

I watched Roo warm up pre match and at training many times and he rarely missed shots at goal.

Simulation of game fatigue and pressure is almost impossible at training. Perhaps sprint a 50, take a shot with 5 teams mates screaming abuse at you.

When coaching cricket 25 years ago (much to the anger of my teammates) I’d schedule sprints during batting in the nets to simulate batting when puffing after running a hard three.

A set routine is fundamental, without doubt and King seems to lack this but mostly with King IMO is mental.
Watch him kick from 50 on a 45 degree ang and he’ll get closer than 30 out directly in front.

Hard to think the club is not working tireless on this issue.

That's how i remember it, i think Hudson was at the club as Sheldon's right hand man, because they worked so well together Hudson and Sheldon the club said, F*** that and gave Hudson the arse.

Matthew loyd has a strong relation with the kings. Him an roughy should be enough. He will improve as his belief improves but it’s hard to watch. Members needed to be better though.

No reason he can’t spend half a day a week with our old number 12, Hoping he still knows where Moorabbin is.

sometimes the best teachers are the ones that had to work hard to improve. They have empathy and an understanding of what the learner is going through

Once they miss the first few, pressure builds and more misses will follow.

It becomes contagious.

But ten behinds before the first goal was scored or whatever it was is too much.

It's just too much.

Peter Hudson was an assistant coach to Ken Sheldon for a few years.

He did teach Stew a routine, but not kicking as he did, Hudson kicked flat punts.

I watch all games where players spin the ball as they walk in surely that adds an element of difficulty to something that we already do poorly. its like tossing the cricket bat from hand to hand as the bowler starts running in,

Is it a paradox that our forwards can't kick goals under stress. Is that not the definition of a forward. Rather than trying to make silk purses, clean out* and churn until you get good goal kickers. Obviously it makes so much difference in terms of effort required by a team to score, making oppositions nervous and actually winning. Last night was a criminal waste (but so has been so much of our recruiting). Infinite capacity to shoot our toes off. Thank goodness our defenders can defend and our mids middle.

* not Max, but if he did not have so much relying on him he possibly would be less strung out when going for a set shot.

Fvck this “too many voices” sh1t from Ratten - what a cop out.

1. Stop twirling the ball in your hands (I don’t twirl my putter in my hands just before a stroke a putt;

2. Stop this bollocks Roughhead like 2 step run-up rubbish. Roughy was a natural with a strong core and a pure strike. Max is a twig with little comparative strength;

3. Lean forward (NOT BACK!!!) and get weight going towards the target thereby creating momentum.

This sh1t is so goddam simple - it’s first year PGA pro coaching stuff yet, we allow it to go on unchecked.

Here’s an idea …

Just get the one voice - Lloyd - who owned the best kick and set shot routine of his generation - and let him do his thing with his former Hailebury protege & tell all the other f****** know-alls to STFU. Morons.

To all the plp that went to the game last night.

Did anyone notice him pre-match? Taking practice shots at goal?

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
