Wearing No. 32. I guess they’re not drafting Paddy this year.

He must have shown then what they wanted to see. We have had a few pre season train with players in the past few years, and passed on all of them from memory.
Welcome Mason. Show us what you can do.

He has a lot of ability. Obviously NM needed a clean out and I bet you he's happy he's out of that place. I bet you Ben Brown and co are too. Looks like they'll be bound for Tassie after this season. It's a fait accompli.

Spoken to a few North supporters recently and asked them about Mason Wood.
They all said exactly the same thing- So Inconsistent, but they all conceded he showed alot of promise at times and had the tools to be a good player.

Would be a good effort if we can take an inconsistent player into a regular contributor.

Good players can go backwards in the wrong environment and when the team is in a rebuilding phase.
Everyone's confidence goes down and it snowballs from there. Especially if a player and coaches aren't on the same page.
Roos have been down for a few seasons now. Couldn't have been great (as we know from only a few years ago). MW was defintley on the outer there.
New team, new vision, bit of faith from the new coach and a player can blossom and reach their potential.
The coaches have seen something, so that's got to help the young man's confidence. My FIL is a mad Roos supporter so I've watched a few games and MW can defintley play. Reckon he may surprise a few.

I urge you to watch the interview with Mason on the Saints website. I think it is the first time I have heard him speak, and he is very impressive. Great depth to his answers . He is very well aware of the opportunity he has been given. It sounds like he is ready to seize that opportunity. His enthusiasm for the club is most encouraging.

Yes I know every recruit will be very positive, but this lad has an eloquence and a maturity that makes me feel he is a good pick up. Now let’s hope he can deliver consistently on the field at - or above - the level he has shown spasmodically over the years.

Really surprised we took a player like Wood, he has all the tools to be a player but has lacked the physicality and consistency to this point in his career, when at 27 he should be at his peak.

Let's hope he doesn't end up a February champion.

If he can turn it around he'll be a real bonus.

I guess he replaces either Parker or Marsh as a back up mid sized forward or perhaps he could play back.

At 27, an expectation of improvement is unrealistic. He's a back up if Membrey gets injured so we can maintain the forward structure

Yep, Membrey or Battle

At a pinch King, but McKernan is more likely then

Maybe even Wilkie, if he were to go down?

Wood is worth a punt.
He is hungry and the type of player we lack, mid size
hybrid type forward.
He’s a bit different to Membrey & Battle and will be a
handy back up to those 2 or changing it up a bit if we
don’t want to go with 3 smalls up forward at any stage.

The smalls who can play forward:
Butler, Billings, Gresham, Higgins, Sinclair, Lonie, Kent.
I’d say all play ahead of Wood unless it’s around structure.

Mediums
Membrey, Battle - certain starters, but lack back up here and that’s probably Woods best chance of playing.

Talls
Ryder/Marshall, King - back up McKernan.

There is no doubt we lack depth in talls on the forward line so I understand recruiting Wood, but surely he is nothing more than back up.

I’d rather see Carslile go forward if required.

I thought Carlisle would be a good forward for that reason...he can intercept laterally and so when we had that 'bomb and hope' thing going on, I thought he'd be good.
Better, perhaps, than a Membrey running on a spear-like lead for a precision pass.

So much for my theory..

So it looks Mr. Wood is bound for the woodwork ...eh...sorry...I mean the 'bench' at best, as a backup.
Just trying to think of players who switched clubs of his age that had patchy careers elsewhere and then turned into consistent players. Can you name a few? Or any?

Thanks for this Fugazi. Not sure about comparing him to Butler, tho - another poster said that his Richmond mates couldn't believe the club let such a good player go - I recon Butler just came out with a point to prove and started again, roughly where he left off, with a club that welcomed him with open arms.

Richmond had too many of the same type of player, it has been said, (although I suspect they let the wrong one go!) and the Tigers did the right thing by making it easy to find a new home that he was happy with, without demanding too high a price - a la Essendon.

Looking at what your Roos friends said, I recon the new St Kilda recruiting and coaching staff, have probably thought that the inconstistent playing can be coached thru - lets face it, the North coaching, etc. staff are a bloody rabble!

Maybe it's not a case of coaching him through his inconsistency?

His inconsistency might be due to North playing him as a tall forward - a position he might not be strong or physical enough for?
Maybe that's where they needed to play him?

but...
Our recruiters might be looking at his combination of height, agility and stamina and thinking there's other areas where he might be better suited - where he could contribute more and become consistent?

Completely agree - I feel that our coaches and recruitment guys saw something really good in him and are confident in being able to get the best from him. Unlike the d/heads at North, but that's not our problem!
