Training - Wed 20th

Post: # 1886885Post B.M »

Players on the track (22)
Coffield, Gresham (came off halfway with a complaint), Ross, Dunstan, Hill, Steele, Lonie, Billings, Butler, Howard, Higgins, Kent, McKernan (Just doing 1 on 1s), Membrey (only half the session), Webster, Highmore, Wood, Paton, Allison, Sinclair, McKenzie, Wilkie, Alabakis

Rest in the Gym or Massage
Ryder, Hannebery and Marshall wandered out for a bit.

I think there was a bad finger injury to someone this week, looks like about a six week lay off.

Byrnes and Bytel being managed

Notes
Usual players performing well in match sim, Sincs, Steele, Wilkie. Lonie, Butler, Paton
McKenzie is super fit and did ok
Webster found the footy and used it pretty well
Kent was pretty good
Billings dominant and looks in ripping nick
Hill runs very hard, is very fast, got the footy in space a bit through gut running
Allison is tall and thin, looks very fit but raw and needs development
Highmore is not KP size and more the size of Coffield looks to have a pretty mature body
Alabakis is huge, don’t think he touched it?
Higgins looks leg heavy, like Dunstan.
Coffield excellent and looking in great shape, is a big boy up close
Wood is a specimen

Disappointing I didn’t see Crouch, wanted a look at him.

Some predictions
Billings will have a huge year
Hill will be better
Coffield to take another step forward
Sinclair to maintain his position - seems highly rated

I was there for a few minutes. The only things I can add was Clavarino was having a little kick to kick, and it was a beautiful morning for a walk.

What are they building to the left of the existing buildings as i look at the photos ?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

The Danny Frawley wellness centre

More a community thing.

Plus a 1500 seat grandstand

Eventually at the other end there will be a basketball court built.

Very happy to hear positive things about Sincs.

To my way of thinking it would be hugely beneficial to our aspirations as a top four side if guys like Sincs can raise the bar. He's well capable of stepping up.

Couldn't agree more - especially the Sinclair part. There's still tons of upside in him - especially with Crouch being around him

Fortunately Sincs is more valued by the club and selectors than by many supporters.

A very important cog in our quest for our next premiership.

Thanks BM.

Coffield - could he transform into a winger or mid? He seems the perfect size and skill set for a wing with his marking and foot skills?

Mc Kenzie - seemed on the outer but giving himself every opportunity by getting fit and hopefully improving his foot skills.

Sinclair - another decent user of the ball, I think that's why Ratts would like him in the team. Just my opinion but Butchers don't get game time under him.

Webster - is he still behind Paton & Long or could he get a game with Coffield and Clark moving up the field?

Billings in good nic is great news, if he tears it up as a high half forward he can do some real damage.

Coffield definitely trained as a defender

As did Billings surprisingly

Butler is very quick

I’d like to know who got injured?

Apparently it was pretty bad

A compound dislocation

Is Webster a good user of the ball, his foot skills are very good if my memory isn't failing, Ratts likes good foot skills right, can Webster find a spot in our best 22? He was highly regarded only a few season's back.

Webster is hit and miss by foot

Can pull off brilliant passes, but can turn it over also.

The big issue with Webster in my opinion is that he lacks the ability to break the lines hence why other younger players were preferred. He is also very one sided, opposition know that he is limited a left foot that can be hit & miss. Webster was part of the sideways Richo ball movement days. I’d be very surprised if he forced his way into the side

and that's the bottom line

Only injuries kept Webster out of the side, initially at least.

Most players are one sided, lefties just stand out.

I know coaches prefer players to use their dominant side wherever possible, because ball retention is so important and goals from turnovers is a huge factor in scores against.

Dual sided players make up a low percentage of players, so they stand out a bit. Hunter Clark is one of the few players that can use his left effectively (but he can still chunk it sometimes)
Caleb Daniel is another who can kick well on his left.

Players use their non dominant side only when they have no choice. They definitely don’t try to pin point passes

Pretty much the rest of the team not named by B.M. came onto the ground shortly after 9am in white shirts, who were only on the ground for about half an hour when they went back inside, presumably to do gym work.
Rest of the guys in orange shirts did full training.
Sinclair looks like he's put on more muscle. Confirm that Alabakis is a BIG unit, but don't know if he's going to be a player.
Crouch and Frawley were on-field kicking the ball to each other in white shirts later on, but they were not involved in the on-field training.
Clavarino only doing laps. Clarke, Joyce, Geary and King doing laps for a while.
King at one stage getting on on one instruction with Roughead on contested leads.

Interesting that Billings has been training with the defenders this year. They obviously have ideas of using him there at times. Will put a real squeeze on small defender positions.
