Paddy McCartin

Post: # 1865783Post saintfreddy »

I know there have been quite a few threads around Paddy (the search function came up with over 3000 mentions). However my question is around given we delisted him, if Paddy puts his name forward for the 2021 draft does it mean he is chosen when any club has the opportunity dependant upon their draft pick? In other words "if" St Kilda wanted him back, we would not have an advantadge of gaining him back on our list unless he was avaiable at a draft pick we thought reasonable that we had?

Paddy will be a delisted free agent so he can choose where he'd like to go. If no one picks him up then he can nominate for the draft.

In addition to the post above on beinga DFA, Paddy has all the say. StKilda has no say now.

Once a player is off a club's list they have no rights over a player.

Once delisted the club has no rights
Bit like when you drop a rookie at the end of year and then pick him up in the draft in the high 90s
It's a gamble

Any chance we can get some compo for losing him?

Nearly 10 years out of the finals and our number 1 pick retired young because of chronic head knocks

I think there is some sort of honour system in some cases, such as when you are forced to drop an ageing veteran to comply with the year end target numbers but announce your intention to immediately re-draft them - the other clubs will keep their hands off.
e.g. we did that with Jason Blake a few years ago.

But I think if a player has been off the list for a while he is fair game for any cub.
Though as a DFA if we make a reasonable offer and Paddy wants to come back he can.
But I'm not sure we would want to revisit that slippery slide again!

As a delisted free agent any club including St Kilda could sign him if they agree terms.
But please, please, please don't.

Not worth the risk. And I’m not talking about his talents as a footballer, which to me he had always disappointed and not lived up to any of the hype or the promise that you’d expect from a top ten draft pick.

If we value the person and ‘care’ about Paddy the person, we shouldn’t be encouraging the bloke to take the field. Why would St Kilda put the guy at risk of doing permanent damage to his brain by re-drafting him?

If we are going to be selfish about it...Can you imaging how unsettling it could be to our senior players if anything serious happened to him while he’s playing at Sandringham or St Kilda.

His set shot goal kicking was poor and his ability to play the modern game was hampered due to his bulkiness. Couldn’t defend once the ball hit the ground. He took 5 years to realise that he needed to be an athlete. He has’t played competitively for so long that I seriously doubt he can get back to an elite level

Anyhow...If he puts himself into the draft I reckon the Cats might take the risk. He could end up with Stuvy and Rhys.

We signed Abbott last year after he was delisted, and was promised to be redrafted as a rookie. The honour system was ignored in that case.
The only difference is we didn’t draft him, we signed him on as a delisted free agent.

We won’t be missing out if another club wants him. We just need to steer clear

If Kingy continues to drop marks and miss bankable setshots the club will be desperate to get Paddy back.

Let's hope the club has a shred of intelligence.

Yep,
And in one sense, probably an irrational one, I hope they pick him.

Once he plays for them, he will not be able to sue us.

Not that Paddy would ever have that in heart, mind and soul (that side of it is well and truly sound, he is a Saint) but that won’t stop litigation lawyers.

See the American press and ads posted by lawyers? If we go American at the rate we are going, it won’t be long before players are regularly suing their clubs, despite the intentions and heart and soul of the player him or herself.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Last I checked he wasn't contracted to St Kilda and seems to go to Geelong games (even the finals last year).

Sorry but, even without the concussion, Paddy never really showed even minimal signs of ever being good enough.
