On this basis you have to feel for Long and legal process, legal process being based on precedent
Ebert 1 week
Shiel 2 Weeks
McStay 2 weeks

Long 3 weeks

Is it one week extra for being a StKilda player??????
FFS - don't be so silly man. The 3 blokes above didn't knock out the bloke they hit. Long didn't mean to do it and the others were unlucky they didn't knock out their opponents who didn't come back on the ground.

The AFL has always worried more about the outcome than the action (which is stupid) but, it is what it is. if Darcy came back on the ground and played out the game; then I'm pretty sure Long would've got 2 as well

Long hit his opponent with his bum, McStay hit his opponent with his gut.
Clearly hitting someone with your bum is a worse offence.

The McStay one is a farce I just laughed when I saw it. He’s not even in the play and Jetta runs into him.

I actually joked to Sainter_Boy that Jetta should be cited for Medium Impact / Body / Reckless

You would think so but I’ve been super impressed with how the back 6 has held up in his absence. Clarke and Hill sharing that HBF seems to have benefited both their games.
Disrupting that Makes me feel a bit worried though Long is definitely top 22

Yeah but we are versatile now due to our form and confidence. Skunk played on the wing area for instance.

Long could play up forward and swap out with Gears on bench even.

The ball is loose in Essendon’s forward line. Shaw and Townsend approach the ball from opposing directions. In the process of taking possession of the ball, Shaw makes high contact to Townsend. It was the view of the MRO that Shaw was contesting the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

The club should always ask the question in this case.
Dear AFL please explain the realistic alternate way Long had to contest the ball ?

Difference:
1. the ball was not on the ground so Townsend was not going in head first like Darcy.
2. Long was closer to the ball than Darcy allowing him to place his body between the ball and Darcy.
Correct action: Long should have taken the ball first then cleaned up Darcy legally and lethally.
Result: Darcy would never play again.

It would seem that the MRO's interpretation of the had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball is:
If you take possession of the ball first and only if you take possession first and you do not prevent the opponent having access to the ball, you are free to send an opponent into kingdom come.

You need to find some better examples. In both of those above the player had his hands on the ball. Long didn’t go for the ball until after he made contact with Darcy.

Read my second sentence
"If you take possession of the ball first and only if you take possession first and you do not prevent the opponent having access to the ball, you are free to send an opponent into kingdom come".

Long was first to ball but instead of taking possession first he inserted himself between the ball and Darcy.
1. Long did not have possession of the ball at impact
2. He was blocking Darcy access to the ball.
That is why Long got suspended, he played the situation wrong and got suspended.
