Who is going to remain on St Kilda's coaching panel??

Post: # 1845985Post Sanctorum »

Now that the clubs have been directed to reduce their football department expenditure by 40% it is more than likely that one or more of the current St Kilda Coaching staff will not be re-employed when the 2020 season restarts on June 11.

The current St Kilda FC coaching staff are:

Brett Ratten - Senior Coach
Brendon Lade - Assistant Coach (Forward line and team offence)
Aaron Hamill - Assistant Coach (Back line and team defence)
Ben McGlynn - Development Manager & Senior Sandringham Coach
Adam Skrobalak - Assistant Coach (Midfield & Contest)
Robbie Chancellor - Assistant Development Coach (Stoppages & Structures)
Jake Batchelor - Development Coach)
Billy Slater - Leadership and Development Coach
Jarryd Roughead - Football Operations

Apart from Brett Ratten it is anybody's guess who will survive the cull, but the one who I really hope stays on is the last one on the list, Jarryd Roughead.

In my mind Roughie, as the sole individual with currency (having only retired at the end of last season) will be the most influential in getting the best out of the players, in particular mentoring the young fellers like Max King, Rowan Marshall and Josh Battle who are potential future stars.

There is always the possibility that some of the higher paid coaches will agree to a cut in pay to enable more of the assistant coaches to stay on, and the likes of Billy Slater (who would only be on a relatively modest retainer) may well volunteer his services as he is probably the wealthiest of them all!

5% pay cuts all round I'd guess.

I would hope they all just take a reduced wage, there's probably not many alternative jobs out there.
There again they all most likely cant travel.

Can’t remember what Rath’s role is but was mentioned recently by Ratten so assume he’s staying.

Anybody who was there during the previous coach's reign should not remain on the panel. Especially given we won't field a reserves side this year.

Slater doesn’t cost us a cent our great benefactor Gerry Ryan pays him direct I’m pretty sure but would still have to go in the cap.

Based on how we played in the second half against North Melbourne, our very poor second halves against Carlton and Sydney in our last three matches, and given the turnover of players on the list who were playing against North, everyone bar Roughead, Ratten, Slater and Lade need to go. We played against North much the same way we have played for the past eight years and we need to make a clean break from that style of play effective before the 11th of June.

David Rath is Head of the Football Programme and is rated as a possible successor to Simon Lethlean.

https://www.saints.com.au/news/242592/s ... department

I omitted in my original post to factor in the entire football department, from Simon Lethlean to the bootstudder, so in reality it may well be decided that the staff closely related to the playing group (such as the coaches) will have priority over the analysts etc

Agree re Lade. I was at the members do earlier this year at Moorabbin and he’s super impressive in person. I could see he had his s*** together and has excellent rapport with the players.

I’d be delighted to see the end of Hammil- I’m amazed he’s lasted this long.

Can't imagine Lade leaving but agree about Hamill, there's also Danny Sexton still at the club in some sort of football role, he's been there since before Ross Lyon's days and represents the "old guard" that no longer have currency....he had massive input as Director of Coaching during Alan Richardson's tenancy.

Maybe the coaches can set an example for the players by making room for everyone within the expenditure cap.
If only 10 players had not been so selfish and done that a decade ago, the club could have replaced a few of the bottom six (who were not AFL grade) with quality imports.
The result would have been numerous premierships.

For the last 8 yrs we have played a frenetic style of football.
If we kick accurately we do alright.
So far in Ratts tenure I'm yet to see much difference.
Time will tell.
So I agree with samurai saint and wonder why we need anymore than the Coach and a couple of assistants.
Maybe if the players used their brains , they might drive themselves to succeed.

Not gonna happen. Rotten's been at the club for two years and was our illustrious forwards coach remember. Club's already opted for same-old, same-old. But with more expensive cattle who couldn't give a d*** about the jumper.

Billy Slater isn't one of the 25 according to the link below. I can't think of anyone else that has been stood down/not in the 25 footy staff able to interact with players

Jake Batchelor was Development Coach under Development Manager Ben McGlynn, guess that's a role that is easily shared around among the many others at the club. Likewise Billy Slater who was only part-time as he also works with NRL teams, reckon Roughie does a lot of leadership mentoring for which he is eminently qualified.
