Roughead could do for Saints what Hodge has done for Lions

Post: # 1821994Post Sanctorum »

Jarryd Roughead's decision to come to St Kilda in a football department role is similar to what the Brisbane Lions intended when they recruited Luke Hodge - it was always the intention that Hodge's primary objective was to join the Lion's football department.

At 32, Roughhead is about the same age as Hodge when the latter moved to the Lions in 2018, and there is little doubt that he is still capable of playing at the elite level. Having witnessed the phenomenal on-field leadership that Hodge has provided to the Lions, which has certainly been an important factor in their success in 2019, I believe that Roughie could well have the same effect for the 2020 Saints if he were to come out of retirement.

God knows that on-field leadership has been sadly lacking at St Kilda Since Riewoldt retired, which has cost a lot of games, particularly so when you consider that St Kilda have rated above average for inside 50's in many games yet were unable to convert these chances to win.

The potential for Roughead to play a mentoring role for the team as a player should not be under-estimated and could be a boost to the development of St Kilda's young talent, especially the bigger blokes like Marshall, Battle and King.

I hope that St Kilda's football department managers will give this proposition serious consideration!

I think it is quite different.

Hodge was gained to provide on-field leadership. The Lions had a lot of young players who needed support on the ground during the game. Though also at training etc. A little less now with Neale having also joined.

Hodge's off-field role will not really commence till he retires.

I hope Roughy plays at Sandringham and acts as a mentor there. I think he's got more value in that role than anything to do with list management.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

100% agree Queen Elizabeth

Roughy only played a handful of senior games this season, he knows his own body better than anyone,
and he knows he's cooked.
"Only 32 y.o."
If he were a roof tiler or a plumber, 32 is in his prime, but in AFL- 32 is pretty much a pensioner.

Agree. Clearly Roughie took the role mainly based on List Manager role. There was never any mention of him playing. (AFL or VFL)

The other difference is that Hodge was a phenomenal captain - I never liked him much tbh but anyone can see what a terrific leader he is. 2 time premiership captain, 3 x AA, once also AA captain. Compare the pair.

there is a lot of doubt of that, hence why he was dropped 3 times this year

Roughy is cooked. Almost everyone understands this.

His farewell game against the Suns should be ignored.

Jordan's "role" as described publicly is pretty much a dream job for a footyphile; sort of cherrypicks the better parts of a senior coach, assistant coach, football director, father confessor and talent spotter roles with vague accountability. Now in reality how can a mere mortal manage the inevitable frictions with so many other technical employees whose jobs overlap and without, presumably, he and the next senior coach setting up clear operational protocols. There is always a risk of too many cooks. Is it a new job under our soft cap - if so what's the trade off. Off course the club does not feel obliged to brief members, possibly because IP would be blabbed on some fan forum or other. I would if I knew, speculation and interminable waiting for the titanic to change course for can be exhausting, we fans need a bone occasionally, yes?

It all sounds a bit nothing, doesn't it. Like the Slater appointment or even Hannebery to be honest (though hopefully something good comes of that in the end). Can't land a big fish into the playing group so land what would have been a big fish if you'd caught it 10 years ago!

He would be the kind of bloke someone who has coached (recently and whom likes the cut of his Jib) has requested to join. Someone like Brett Ratten would have requested this.

Yes, it does smack of jobs for the boys, but in reality what Roughy brings is 'in your face' honesty, the no bullshyte kind of stuff. I suspect that he might have helped turn the careers of not just a few players around at the Hawks.

Fantastic for us and thank you Saints, another step in the change-up from the last 6 years. And for mine, Roughy wouldn't have been interested if it had no substance to it. This could be considered to be a master stroke in the next 6 years, who knows?
