Is it time to say farewell

Post: # 1816920Post saynta »

From afl.com.au

"Who has already called time?
No Saints have officially retired yet.

Is it time for goodbye?
It's looking increasingly likely Jack Steven will wind up at Geelong next season, with AFL.com.au reporting in July the Cats would attempt to lure him to the club. He's won four best and fairest awards at the Saints but a fresh start makes sense for the star midfielder who has struggled with mental health issues. St Kilda is on the road to close its season, against Sydney, so Saturday afternoon's clash with Carlton could be his last time representing the club in Melbourne. Restricted free agent Jack Newnes is every chance to be elsewhere. It's hard to imagine Dylan Roberton (heart) will take to the field again while Paddy McCartin has had a long-running battle with concussions, clouding his future. David Armitage has probably played his last game at AFL level, while key defender Nathan Brown and big man Sam Rowe could be on the way out as well. - Dinny Navaratnam

The Cats are desperate to nab four-time best and fairest winner Jack Steven."

Longer and/or Pierce would be done you’d think.
I’d be ok with giving Brown another year if he wants to play on, if only as a good backup.

Fresh start?

Doesn’t matter where you go, you still take your own baggage with you.

I think he’s better off with his mates at St Kilda in the warm embrace of a club that knows and values him.

Carlisle may have more talent, but Brown has easily been our best key defender this year. Absolutely deserves another year and I think we need him.

it's similar to the banned nickname for our previous coach.
You're gonna get so many opinions on its origin, some sounding plausible, some being plain ridiculous
Nobody can give a definitive answer

One suggestion is that it began decades ago, when the late great Graham Farmer began using handball a lot more,
changing the game.
Cats may have been called "the Handballers"
and oppo supporters changed it to insult the team.

Going way back in my time in the 60's & 70's it was always used as a derogatory term = soft, carrying a womans handbag, playing like women etc. I guess not very politically correct in this day and age. If anyone else has a plausible reason for it go for your life.

Talking of Polly, I just saw he died today,

A true great and a footy legend who changed the game.

RIP Mr Farmer.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-08-14/ ... al-legends

"Six years later – with three Sandover Medals, seven club best and fairests and three WAFL premierships to his name – Farmer decided it was "now or never" in terms of a move to Victoria.

He chose Geelong over St Kilda because of his friendship with Cats coach Bob Davis, who would recall that snaring Farmer was "like all our Christmases had come at once".

Geelong paid an unprecedented £2000 ($4000) transfer fee to East Perth, but he was worth every penny."

Make you want to cry.

Can you image how many flags we would have won in the 60's with Polly, the Doc and Stewie in the same side.

Newnes being a restricted FA is music to my ears!
First Richo home and then hopefully Newnes also.
I’d take even a third round pick for him!

As for Stuv, Girlong can f*** off!

Roberton and McCartin are both contracted for next year. Word is that Robbo will definitely be having another go at it. No idea re Paddy.

Carlisle triggers his extra year this week.

Written by a hamfisted moron that didnt bother to research.

Agree. Very lazy ”journalism”.

Steven’s move not set in stone.

The club’s apparent full support and leaving the decision to him will hopefully convince him that he is already in the right and supportive place. Fingers crossed.

All decisions are easy until it actually comes to the point you have to decide for real. For all who want Jack at Geelong there is going to be a core of players that see him as a threat and won't be so welcoming. Radical change often seems like a solution but it can be a false impression - greener grass over there stuff. Locker room conversations with Junior Ablett might not be as much fun as with the Joshs' and Jacks'. And then there is a new yucky song to learn......

That's right but it goes way back further according to my 94 year old (ex) father in law

Back in the days before sportsbags players used to bring their kits in Gladstone bags ( their had to take home their own jerseys to was them in those days).. Geelong were the first side that ran the ball with speed in a more open contest... Back in the days of brutal football this was considered soft... hence they carried handbags intead of Gladstone bags...

I used to be supersaints but after 16 years my profile dissapeared... ??? if I make any reference to past posts .. it will be under supersiants.. glad to be back on line

The hand bagger call came from the late 80s-mid 90s when they we’re actually a good team.

It was a reference to them carrying handbags because they were soft and couldn’t handle the big occasions.
Under Blight they basically played an all out attack game, and didn’t defend, which was brilliant against weaker teams, but didn’t stand up against the best in finals. Hence, them been labelled front runners.
