The Cattery on Saturday

Post: # 1804566Post thejiggingsaint »

My sincere respect and admiration goes out to those poor sods who make the trip to Geelong this coming Saturday. I've been down there a few times and been on the receiving end of a fair bit of crap after some fairly comprehensive pastings, but this week is looming as a bloodbath on the scoreboard. I hope and pray that we see the miracle!!!

Just about the worst two seasons I've experienced......... and I've seen a few ordinary ones in the late 90s and early noughties. It's NOT the losses per-se, but rather the constant repetition of PERFORMANCES that kill the enthusiasm. I'm resigning up as a member again next year........ but have little enthusiasm for it. I don't know about our recent matches being labelled "Coach-killers" I would describe them more as "Membership-killers" I dread to think how many more will drop off after this season.

I might go - never been to Geelong for a game. I keep telling my 10 year old daughter who comes to games with me that - I watched us win 4 wooden spoons in a row when I was her age. But when we turn around and win the place is amazing! I tell her that saints fans go to the footy no matter what - that’s how we’ve lasted over 100 years. Sometimes I find it very hard to live up to but - l love the saints no matter what.

I've been down there a few times, first time was in 2001 on the Bus from Moorabbin, (lost by 12 points) the Saints put up a good fight but ultimately were just fell short. Geelong that season were three wins out of the eight but were on an upward trajectory with the "father-son" recruits.

We were there again in 2002 for one of the biggest pastings I've seen us get (a 122 point loss..... 20 goals more!!!) THAT was a L-O-N-G drive home.

Next was 2004 when another poor first quarter resulted in us playing catch-up with the Catters getting up by 7 points.

The one constant for me has been the crowd down there..... good kids when they're winning, but boy do they like to rub it in!!!

I wont be going down there this season, but I admire anyone who does! This will be the first year that I haven't been to at least ONE interstate game with the Saints....... no enthusiasm for it I'm afraid.

Don't forget China!

I can't understand those people that said we have a favourable draw this year.
I think it's a shocker!

I went to the the 1998 and 1999 wins. Two of the very best wins I have seen as a St Kilda supporter.

Then came the drought.

2000 - Ronnie Burns smashed us.
2002 - Worst ever day as a St Kilda supporter; stayed to the end.
2003 - Touted as the "future rivals" game, which we just lost, and Bomber piped up about our kids being over-hyped.
2004 - one of the best games, but we never quite had their measure on quite a hot day.

And that was the last one I went to. Am thinking it's time to go down there again.

They will be absolutely salivating at the thought of hosting us this weekend, they know they will get the points and they can just sit back and relax while watching the Christians being fed to the Lions.

That's how far we have fallen.

I'll be like a little kid watching a horror movie, curled up on the couch with my feet tucked underneath me, turned sideways to the TV, with my hand over my face peaking at the screen between my fingers, while biting the nails on my other hand.

I expect us to lose, but not by as much as you might wanna hope given our position. Night game, dew, wind, Geelong on the rebound, us in a slump but with players coming back (Marshall our but Lonie in...Jack Stuv?) all adds up to some angry and messy game that might actually help our cause. I am speaking with same authority as Bill Brownless does as a potential senator here, so watch out Cats.

Memories here...
Round 10 1999, under Timmy Watson.
Saints defeated Cats by 10 points at K Park, despite being 19 points down at 3/4 time.

But it was long ago in a galaxy far far away.

It is going to rain
AND
The ground is a sardine can.
Look at it on Google Earth.
38deg09min30sec South, 144deg21min17secEast
The Geelong City Council paid tens of millions for the ground to be redeveloped but failed to move the ground further away from the road.
There was plenty of land to the west.
Result, the ground has no wings.
It seriously looks like the grandstands were trimmed afterward by the road going through, but no the road was there before the redevelopment.
A bit lacking up top the people of Geelong.

I remember Melbourne going down there when Dean Bailey was still the coach......... If memory serves me correctly the dreamons were pasted by around 200 points.... Bailey got the arse on Monday. I'm just hoping that history doesn't repeat itself.

The 98 and 99 wins were both superb .High scoring games , and we got up in both. The 98 one was very early in the season, and a great start after the disappointment of the 97 GF loss.

Then in 99 it was around mid season. At that stage we were looking really good under Timmy Watson. On the drive home I allowed myself to dream of another crack at a flag. A couple of weeks later came the debacle against Hawks at Waverley, losing after leading 11.5 to 1.2, and the wheels fell off completely.

Most years it was a long trip home after a loss. In 89 we lost, but Plugger kicked 5 or 6 , so that helped soften the blow.

Can’t bring myself to go this week. Getting smashed and getting home after midnight. The couch for me.

Best wishes to everyone going down.

Best memory was when that animal Hocking (Whiskas, not Shocking) had a go at Harves and we rallied for a great win.

But mostly it has been misery down there.
Spider kicked 9 down there near the end of his StK career but we still lost.

Thank heavens we aren't old enough to have experienced the old Corio Oval which was an even more miserable venue.
Our loss there in 1899 still haunts this club and clearly remains the most embarassing performance ever by any team in VFL/AFL history.

The “Pudding Bowl” match, another milestone disaster in our history, when Watson said in the ensuing press conference, “Some of these guys have heads bigger than pudding bowls” I think referring to Barry Hall among others.
What a collapse from there! Within twelve months he knew it was all over.
